i took my mares rug off this morning and was presented with a weird lumpy rash type thing on her flanks, just behind where your leg would go. It is very hot and extremely painfull - the slightest touch drives her mad. the lumps are not hard, but soft swellings. The hair and skin is normal - almost as though coming from the inside out?
Nothing in her diet has changed, she is clipped but was last clipped about 3 weeks ago so cannot be that.
I rode her yesterday and she was bathed afterwards so cannot be sweat related. the shampoo i used was the same she always has so i doubt reacion to that.
i have owned this mare 8 years and she has never reacted to anything before be it flys, sprays anything.
it has spread slightly from this morning to this evening and the surronding area is also very sore.
A friends dad who is a vet said to cold hose which she seemed to enjoy.
It is not itchy and is very very hot.
i am presuming it is allergy related but have changed nothing n her routine. she is not turned out so cannot be anything she has eaten in the field - although perhaps in hay?
has anyone any ideas?if it has not improved tommorow i will be getting vet.
Thanks

hi my pony came up in lumps when she was about 8yrs i had had her since she was 3yrs and never had problem but these lumps came up but they were really itchy and hot turns out my ponys immune system had packed in but we managed to sort her out after a 5 grand vet bill.she was bald and looked a mess if yor horse isnt itching i would hazard a guess that a bitey fly or bug has got under her rug and she has had a reaction to it u could try piriton antihistimine they are really good

mine had excatly the same the other day, is it a group of bumps or small single ones?

his was an allergic reaction and had to have a steriod injection. as his kept getting worse the longer it was left. i would advise a vet if no better by monday.

It sounds like a bad allergic reaction - My horse got it last winter after being stung by something in a lake.

does it look like this?
