After being so so poorly, James is now back in work. I took him out for about his 4th hack on Sunday and in true TB fashion he's finding it way too exciting to be out and about again. He jogs and throws himself about or walks at one zillion miles an hour! Now, because when he was ill he lost shed loads of weight I haven't clipped him at all (so he didn't use any of his condition to stay warm) so he's woolly but is now nicely covered, has a belly and is looking really healthy.
So imagine how annoyed I was I overheard from two other riders while I was out on him comments like 'Look at the state of that...horse should be clipped right out.....some owners have just no idea......get a chill if not careful.......'

I've bought this horse back from the dead, he shouldn't be with us let alone bouncing his way round the countryside. He was only sweaty for gods sake, there was no white bl**dy foam on him (can't say the same about his mouth however!).

Why did the feel the need to say anything or they could've asked me directly but no, lets just make assumptions.

Really annoyed me that did. Shame neddie was too excited for me to stop and give them a mouthful.

Right Thankies people - RANT OVER!!!!

Nothing wrong with a bit of sweat! Good grief! As long as your careful they don't get a chill, which I'm sure you are.

In my opinion too many people take too much off and their horses get cold!

As you know in the horse world, we all keep learning and adding to our knowledge base. These people obviously feel that they know it all, poor them!! They are the ones that should stop and listen to themselves, it is very easy to critise other people and much harder to learn from others.

Hold your head up and ignore them.

Indeed, people can be very judgemental. Have a 25 year old horse who gets extreme sweet itch most of the year...his mane is hogged and so is the top of his tail......I do a lot of SJ.

Mostly stares and snide remarks but I ignore them as I know he is more comfortable (doesnt itch as much) doesnt get sore anymore and I can get lotion where it needs to be, directly on the skin AND I can wash mane and tail with potions weekly!!

BUT I know what you mean and having gone out jumping yesterday, comments have started yet again for 2007!!

Just ignore them, at least you know why.....!!

He's a real sweaty betty and if he'd been fully fit and in normal work he'd have a hunter clip but as it is v careful when I get back, always cooled off, brushed and wrapped up before turnout - takes hours - I'd give anything to have him clipped again - maybe next year!!!

you always have to get someone who think they know it all. I had a full tb mare who had colic surgery after months on box rest when it was ok to work her i decided just to get straight on, i had this mare for years and knew no amount of lunging etc would help it was a case of no matter what was done before the 1st 20mins on her back was the worst i could of lunged 4 2hours before and it would of been the same, so i hired the paddock and got on and there was a lady standing next to my mum telling her how thick i was to get on like i did my mum explained to her and her reply was no i dont think so the horse has been a rake for the past few months so were would energy come from and if its that dangerous you should have had the damn thing shot while you had the chance, bearing in mind she was not dangerous just had 6 months box rest. with 2 months walking in hand, i thought you t**ser. Dont worry you know your horse better

Glad it's not just me! It's amazing the crap some people come out with really! Can't believe that person sid that to your Mum!

Your right, you know your horse better than anyone.

I so wish I could have sworn at them!!! If I'd have yelled though, I think James would have buggered off down the roaad at top speed, he was that much on is toes!!!!

There is a small minorty that like to think they know all without facts, I knew my mare was not dangerous I mean most horses would have an explosion after that length of time, The way I looked at it was I gave my horse the best care poss and there was a valid reason for her being the way she was so dont worry what other people say.

how annoying, i totally agree owners know their horses better than anyone else, take no notice, if he looks fab then so what if hes not clipped.

i didnt cilp my tb for weeks in to winter, i even took him to shows all fluffy... god knows what people where thinking!!

good for you for not saying anything, you dont want to lower yourself!

There are some horse folk that I dont like and there is one on every yard offering up their point of view regarless of tone, which is usually very high so the rest of the people can hear and with no regards to your feelilngs or of the true facts. These people make me want to turn them upside down head first into the muck heap. I think you were very dignified in dealing with them turn the other cheek is always the best policy on the other hand I bet we could all see that certain someone in the muck heap in fact its brought a smile to my face ! Chin up.

How horrible! I wish people would remember that there's always a history behind every horse.

Just ignore them. In my experience people tend to over clip for fashion reasons anyway!

I know, the moral highground remains mine!!!!

I think the TB's look sooo funny all woolly, if I'd have seen you at a show I wouldn't habe been able to resist running my hands through his coat!!!!

My TB is very furry, he is clipper phobic anyway and we don't really do enough to make it worthwhile. I clipped under his neck with manual clippers just to keep him cool but he does look very fluffy!

my cob is very fluffy, very old and very muddy and i ride him just the way he is, wet mud and all. i dont care a stuff what people think. if i wash his legs he will get mud fever , if i keep him in to dry it will take a week and he prefers not to be clipped so i dont. i get horrified looks but i just smile sweetly. if your horse is well fed and well loved and looked after then let them get on with it they clearly have nothing better to do !!

All horse people are like that - think of how many Barbaro experts we have here and they are 3000 miles away from the horse.

I keep my TB woolly every year cos he lives out during the day and only comes in on a night (the more natural the better i say!!) I wouldn't dream of clipping him cos he needs all that hair to keep warm!! I agree with Arwen and think a lot of people have their horse clipped for fashion purposes. Horses get longer hair in winter for a reason so if they're not being ridden very often I don't think it's fair to clip them.
I couldn't give a t**s what people think, as long as my horse is happy!!!

Hi Gingerbird!

So, you have a James too!

(It's a lovely name for a horse isn't it

)
Meet my James in the avatar & sig pic below.

We never clip our horses - they climb some pretty big hills (700-800mtrs) when we hack out around were they are, get sweaty, live outside 7/7 and they are NEVER ill.

Best of luck with your James....

I've noticed you have a James too - There really is no better name! And He's not a Jim or Jimmy either, he's always looked like a James!!!! Maybe we should start our own 'Horses named James Clique'!!!!!!

@@I knew my mare was not dangerous I mean most horses would have an explosion after that length of time,@@

i agree with you, i got straight back on my horse after he'd been off work for four years (while i was at uni), i broke him in once already!
he was an angel and glad to be back working

Just laugh at their dubness. Far too many people clip for no good reason, unless ther in hard word, like ridden x-country every day or hunted everyday, then i wouldnt clip at all.

I too have a very hairy TB (the hair at the tops of his legs is about 2 inches long at the mo), and he's had one low trace clip this year which has fully grown out now. Yes he sweats when he works, but he spends more time not working, and I'd rather he was warm in the field.
I'm a big believer in it's not the sweating that's harmful, it's the mismanagement of a sweaty horse.

Ignore the ignorant bystanders......you know what's best for your horse, and that's what counts.

Both my two old girls (23 and 19) are never clipped. I ride them out and they may get a bit sweaty. On my return I turn them out in the field and they have a good roll and cake themselves in mud. Problem solved. Nothing like a good roll to get rid of the sweat. If yours does not roll then just buy an aerotex rug and let him cool down in that. At least you hack your horse out which is probably far more than most the other horses around you.

i get this too,i decided not to clip jay out as i wanted him to stay as warm as possible.

hes fine on his own but if we hack out with others he can come home sweaty, had comments on how he just has to be clipped out for his sake
