My lovely but usually lively and naughty Lab is very poorly with a mystery condition. Was at the yard yesterday with her and the collies, everthing as usual.Got home fed the dogs,Lab polished off one of the collies leftovers as well as her own food(behind my back i must add). All fine that evening, had scrap of cheese with relish and went to bed.Woke up in the night and Lab is violently sick,i swear more than she has eaten all day. This morning there is just mucus with spots of fresh blood and she is so subdued, hiding under the bushes, tail between legs, and very un lab like is refusing food.Trip to Vet who is concerned so x rays and barium meal later and no clear diagnosis other than gas in her colon.Bloods are normal though.Brought her home and still much the same. One runny stool which looked very red?Phoned vet who said not to worry, let her rest and review in the morning. Not sure what to think.Anyone got any clues. She may have eaten something at the yard but can't think what. There is no poison around because of all the dogs and horse.

No advice but just wanted to say hope she gets better soon. I know how terrifying it is to see them so ill and to feel helpless. I've no idea what mine ate, but three days of throwing up and he was fab afterwards. They get so unwell, don't they? :(

I'm quite suprised they didnt open her up if they found a lot of gas in the intestine on the xrays?! Was there no mention of that?
Poor girl, hope she makes quick recovery

Hope she soon improves. Are you able to get her to take fluids so she is not dehydrated. Even spooning a few tablespoons into her mouth every hour or so will help if she isn't drinking.

The vet gave me the canine equivalent of lucozade crystals for Bear when he was chucking up so much. Maybe ask for that? Syringe it down her if she's not drinking.

I am guessing the barium eal looks like its progressing ok through the intestines? Tomorrow some more xrays would probably confirm this. Best of luck for her, I would check her a couple of times throughout the night if I were you.

Thank you everyone for all your words of comfort.Luna was back at the vets this am as she is still not drinking and eating and remains very depressed and out of sorts.Had an endoscopy which found imflammation and bleeding in the stomach, but no definite cause as yet. They are keeping her in dogspital overnight and aim to review tomorrow. They may well open her up if all else fails. She is on intravenous antibiotics and antacids.Fingers crossed.

I hope so.Apparantly she was spotted rooting around in the muckheap at the weekend so wonder if she ingested something other than the usual organic materials there. We did all worm the horses a few days ago and not sure if somehow this could have contaminated her if she ate the affected poo.

it could well be the horse wormers, tell your vet which make were used. Many are highly toxic and horse muck from those horse will be dangerous to the environment. If you read the packets of horse wormers they are pretty foul. Good luck and fingers crossed. Also could it be weedkiller, fertiliser, or some other chemical that is used around the yard, or has he managed to get hold of someones ibrupofen that can cause stomach bleeding and labs are notorious thieves so could he have stolen some?

Have just got her home from vets and looking much brighter and more interested in her surroundings. Both collies were overjoyed to see her and made a big fuss as if they know she,s been ill.She had two wee,s and then ate some fresh waitrose ham from my daughter, just a little to start with. She seems to know i,m getting ready to go to the stables, which is another good sign.Sadly it,s just me and the collies today.Thank you all for your wonderful thoughts and messages.:)

Have just returned from the stables to be greeted by a much perkier Luna who seemed to have regained her enthusiasm for food, though only very selected fine tidbits as yet,but hey ho, it's a better picture than was posed yesterday. Can't wait for her to resume her usual miscievous antics, and i never thought i would ever want that. She can be very naughty. It is so lovely to know there are such kind and thoughtful people on this forum.Thank you all, your support has been much appreciated.

Probably some noxious substance she ingested.Vets were worried there may be a foreign body but no signs via the usualscans.Luna was a hairs width away from a laporotomy. She is continuing to improve and wants to play now so i guess whatever it was has been ameliorated by her treatment, essentially being on a drip for 24 hours with antibiotics.I think what she ate will be a mystery.
