I will preface this by saying poor Molly is now back at the vets and on a drip.

Molly is my sisters 4 year old Stafford bitch, was being sick on Monday but drinking. Sister called vets, told to keep Molly quiet, hydrated and plain food.

Tuesday, still being sick, I took her to the vets, dog slightly dehydrated, was given sickness injection (and howled the surgery down) temp ok
Weds, little to drink, refused scrambled egg, boiled chicken or sensitive dog food
Thursday, back at vet, has lost 1/2 kg, dehydrated . Stomach x rayed, showing empty. Dog in tonight on a drip, and having bloods taken

Sister is beside herself and worried sick. Any ideas? I felt a proper cow leaving poor Molly behind but know it is the best place for her.

A friend's dog has been very sick lately, it turned out to be lead poisoning, we think from drinking contaminated puddles in a local park. She has been very very ill, but is now on the mend if quite skinny. I think the vets can test for it.

I've just read about a dog that had licked/eaten some hand or face cream that turned out to be toxic. There are quite a few plants that are poisonous as well. Has she been lapping out of puddles? In this dry weather, it is possible that any puddles contain rat urine...

Just another thought, she couldn't have been bitten by an adder could she? Has she gone very subdued? Is there any sign of a swelling or a small bite?

Poison? Slug pellets? rat poison? Some pleb who dislikes dogs throwing poisoned treats in the area? That algae poison you get in stagnant ponds etc?

I know on the fb Lancashire Heeler forum there have been a few dogs sick, they have not met but vet seems to think its a virus of some sort. A few were hospitalised and all recovered, hope this is the case for your sisters dog.

You mention sickness, but what about the other end, any diarrhoea, or non productive straining. If the latter could possibly a blockage, doesn't necessarily have to be in the stomach.

X rayed last night and no blockage. Blood test results today. Face cream could be a possibility. Sister works from home so dog pretty much with her at all times but Molly will eat anything. Thank you for your suggestions. I hope it's not contagious as I am the one taking her to the vets...

Picked up a happy Molly from the vets. Looks like it started off as upset tummy combined with the beginnings of a phantom pregnancy. She is now drinking and hopefully will start eating soon or will have to go back..

Ahh...spent Sunday morning at the vets AGAIN. More injections and pills. My sister had caved in as so worried about her dog not eating and given her totally inappropriate food. Stern words and a strict diet sheet means Molly is now finally on the mend.

Thank goodness you're keeping an eye on things. Your sister does know that chocolate is toxic to dogs doesn't she? There are lists of things, plants etc that are poisonous to dogs available on the internet, might be worth showing her...

She knows about those sort of things. She was feeding Molly things like rice pudding to tempt her appetite which was far too rich on a very inflamed stomach. She really meant well but hadn't really taken on board what I was saying. Molly goes in to be spayed once she is better to avoid further phantoms as well....
