We have a dog and a bitch and she has started collecting all the toys she can find covering them all with a blanket and curling up next to them. If boy dog goes near she growls at him, he was too scared to go to the water bowl and she wouldn't come out to eat. Any ideas?

Phantom pregnancy?

the water bowl isn't the problem, that was just an example of how scared she has made the other dog!

What do I do about phantom pregnancy? She hasn't recently been in season, was back in Jan.

Also I took her motley assortment of "puppies" (a rubber plane, a furry crab, a big rubber chicken and a purple ball) away from her when she went out for a walk, should I let her have them back? She wasn't too upset when she got back.

sounds like that was the right thing to do.

Tia, my Pointer, does this... she did indeed have a phantom pregnancy... all her teats swelled, but she also got an infected womb because of it

We ended up having her spayed, although I really would have liked some pups from her because she is excellent breeding!

She still does it now, and we just take whatever she is nesting away from her

Could she actually be pregnant then??

No, boy dog was neutered back in Dec and she is not any fatter (than usual anyway) She is never off the lead and out of sight so has not encountered any other dogs either.

I keep taking the toys and she keeps finding new ones!! I didn't realise how many they had. Poor thing it is sad (although also funny) to watch her trying to feed a rubber chicken drumstick!

Ignatia is very good for phantom pregnacies. My girl had one after her first season so I gave this to help ease it out & it did. When she had her 2nd season I gave it to her daily after her season & she has not had a phantom this time.

Minnie does this and she is spayed! we cant let her have balls in the house as she just gathers them all up in special places and sits with them grumping at anyone who will listen, remove the balls and we have a happy dog!
she has however made a nest in the garden and filled it with all sorts of rubish, she goes and sits in there if we let her

My bitch had a phantom pregnancy after every season, she was quite similar to what you described, we took her to the vet and they will give you something to take the symtoms away. My bitch didn't get fatter but she produced milk and she nested like you have described. we had her spayed after the 3rd phantom.
My sisters bitch on the other hand is very possesive with her toys, whenever my dogs or my parents dogs go into her house she hides all her toys and if one of our dogs pick a toy up she will growl, take the toy off them and run off with it!
maybe, if you can be sure she is not having a phantom pregnancy, try keeping all the toys off the dogs for a while and see if things change?

WE have been removing the toys as she finds and hoards them but then found her curled up amongst the riding boots & wellies growling and barking at the other dog!!

She does seem to be getting better though so thanks for the advice
