We've just come back from a long hack. The enthusiasm of riding had gone out the window since my son realised ponio was strong and that if he wanted to put his head down he would, and nothing he did would stop him. He'd already lost his nerve on another pony, and I was thinking I'd made a mistake in buying a shetland and trying to get it to take a novice off the LR.
We've had our moments trying to make ponio from a LR pony into a first ridden all rounder. He couldnt canter, could just do a few strides of trot before thinking he could stop dead. a half capable child giving him aids would just make him nap. (on the lR he was an angel).
So, we tacked him up, put on his nose net and off we went.
On the way back my son had a little trot (all by himself), then asked if he could canter. Well, if he wanted to I wasnt going to stop him! A bit daft really, as my son has never cantered before, and this was an open field (40 acres) and ponio IS strong. I ran along side them and they had a whale of a time. Ponio got a bit excited and threw in a few bucks to start with, then perfect canter. Son was holding on for dear life shouting "yeeha!!".
I'm so proud of both my boys. Ponio for being such a cheeky little git, but doing us proud when it matters, and my son for overcoming his fear of riding and managing his first ever canter. The bond between these two is growing by the day.
sorry
. Feel free to ignore my mad ramblings!
