We have been long reining for a week now, so today was the first trip out on the road. I was shaking like a leaf as it was the first time since the accident I had been on the road with a horse, and I had lots of nerves. But Donovan was a star!!

P.S, anything you can see that we are doing wrong?

We are still a bit confused by steering, but are working on it!!!

Wow he looks fab:D I know nothing about long reining but it all looked very controlled and impressive to me. I am going to learn to long rein our youngster in March - I bet I will look like I am knitting with the reins and he will be hooling around at the other end:eek: Well done for getting out there again it must have been very hard.

he looks super. And well done on getting out on the road. I'm not sure I'd ever be out on the roads again after what happened. Balls of steel I think is the phrase!

Yep, I must admit, I am quite proud of myself as well! I did have my husband walking in the middle of the road as well.

What a lovely post, well done you, that must have taken a lot of positive thinking and deep breaths. Donovan is looking great. I can''t see anything wrong, that's pretty much how I do it I think!

Yes, we do aim to drive him, already done some in hand showing. But I am absolutely loving this long reining. Benson taught us everything, we didnt teach him a thing, but Donovan is a complete blank canvus and is looking to us to be taught, which is so exciting. he is like a little sponge, soaking up everything, ( well almost everything) we are teaching him.

The only thing I am not sure about is, have I got the long reins through the right ring?

may i say he loks gorgeous calm and in control an going lovely not just slopping along - with regards to you - you should feel so so proud what you have achieved not only with your gorgeous man but with you personally to overcome everything and look so relaxed - big big hugs xxxx

Do you know, while we were doing it, I was ok, a little nervous, but just kinda got on with it. Its only now that I am really thinking about what we have achieved today.

I was just about to comment, I would put the long reins on a lower ring. Putting it on a higher ring puts a lot more pressure on the horse and gives a lot more leverage in terms of pulling the head in (not saying that's what your doing, just saying...) Personally I have the riens so that they run more or less horizontal IYSWIM, but that's just me, I'm sure others will do it differently!

Benson21, Donovan looks lovely and really genuine and so good to see you out and about with a horse enjoying yourself again :) Be very chuffed with everything you've achieved with him so far.

Ok, I have got lower rings so will try them tommorrow. Thanks for that. x

Also, someone was lunging today with a roller on with a numnah underneath. Should I put a numnah on him, or is it just personel choice?

Aww, he looks lovely. The only thing I would say (at risk of being jumped on about freedom of choice!) is I wore a hat when I was long reining my boy, just on case. :)

are you leaving then?

Hat... I must admit I did think about it, dont really have an excuse for not putting one on, other than not having one! Obviously mine was recked from the accident and i have never replaced it!!

Benson21 you are an inspiration massive well done to you for getting back out on the road you are so brave. Donovan is beautiful and looks fab.

My accident was no way as bad as yours but I took my girly out for a tiny hack round the village today and we did great but I felt quite sick when I got back!

So, more questions, sorry! When we are long reining he is constantly tucking his head in as you can probably see by the pics. is that something that I want to happen, or is it he is evading the bit, and if so, how do I stop that? And also, of all of you who long rein, do you wear a hat?

Well done and you should be proud. I always wear a hat long reining but I have a TB that can be a bit sharp (but not nasty) I also would put the reins on a lower hole as they can simulate the leg if you give them a tiny flap movement when you ask them to walk on. On the higher ring you may find that the nose gets tucked in as its where the reins 'put him' if that makes sense. My horse stops / slows down mainly by me 'closing' my legs so again having the rein lower is more realistic. Use your voice alot but you sound the sort of person that chatters away to her horse - meant nicely lol ! By the way can I have the brown lorry in the 3rd pic - it'll match my tack ?
