Very quick question about seasons...

PF came into season in July, which is mid-winter here. She got out of her stable and squirted wee at all the boys in the stable block. Since the lights were left on all night at winter (and I know they do this at TB studs to 'trick' mares into believing it's spring) do you think she was actually ovulating? Vet seemed to think she might NOT have been even though she was as randy as she's ever been. How would you be able to tell (I mean apart from the weeing and winking)?

Get her palpated and ultrasounded to see if there are any "active" follicles. That's the only real way. If she's doing all that, she probably is (or was) cycling properly and ovulating.

I can't see any reason why she shouldn't have been ovulating. Even without the benefit of lights, many mares will come into season through the winter - AND get in foal given half a chance.

She was definitely doing all the 'right' things.
BYW, following on from the frozen/chilled/natural semen question, I'm sending her to Buenos Aires this weekend to get AIed. The vet is going to try frozen but has already said Stally's semen isn't great quality and they've never tried frozen before... Feeling a bit discouraged

How about trying CRIA - CRIA Embriones. Talk to Dr Balbuena there; he's fantastic with frozen semen!

I'm in a slightly delicate situation; I'm getting the service for free, but of course have to pay costs. I'm trying to decide now whether it's worth the risk. Their vet has said that if she doesn't take the first time, she probably will the second, but now I'm getting a bit alarmed at just how much time PF might have to spend in Buenos Aires with livery and vets' fees adding up...
