We retired a 22 year old horse in January, to a friend of mine to be a happy hacker, friend was having great time pottering round bridle paths, then 8 weeks ago horse fell on road (pot hole) and went down on her knee, vet came and flushed wound and dressed it, but it wouldn't clear up, well she had it x rayed and scanned last week, and she has fractured a non weight bearing bone and has several bone chips floating about, due to her age and existing arthritis her owner has decided to PTS before winter comes . She is comfy at moment on 2 bute a day.
Ny friend is devastated so are we, I keep thinking if I had kept her as a field ornament it wouldn't have happened, but she would not have been happy just standing in a field that's why I let her go for just the cost of her tack.
So she has till the weather turns then she will be going to rainbow bridge... So sad.

You said yourself she wouldn't have been happy just stood in a field. I can't help thinking you made the same choice for her as she would have chosen for herself by finding her a new career. You couldn't guess that this accident would happen.

I'm so sorry. These accidents are bad luck. There will always be the 'what ifs' but we make decisions for the right reasons and it was so unfortunate, it couldn't have been foreseen.
Hope you and her new owner are ok.

It is so sad, heartbreaking for all involved. I don't think anyone is to blame though. 22 is not old to be ambling around bridlepaths and this type of accident could just as easily happen to a 4 year old that potentially renders them a field ornament. My thoughts are with you x
