Our first foalie (called Sugababe) born in Germany got a severe kick to her head on Tuesday morning at only two weeks old and had to be rushed to the Vet Hospital. Very sadly they had to operate and remove her eye. We are just devastated. We had such a bad year on the horse front last year and so looking forward to this year but it has started again with such horrible news.

Our poor wee baby is staying at the Vet Hospital for the time being as they had to watch her for infection and possible brain damage. They were a little worried on Tuesday evening as she was very disorientated........poor wee mite.

Yesterday she had perked up more and was getting used to her bearings a bit better.

Words cannot describe how we are feeling, especially when it is all happening in a different country.

The mare is very protective of her new born and we think that another horse maybe came to close to her stable and while she was protecting her baby she unfortunately hurt her in the process. Talk about a freak accident, its just so so sad.

We wont be able to bring her home to the UK until her eye has completely healed, but it will be such a big worry for us.

So needing some good luck vibs for wee Sugababe..............

aw - what a shame
good luck for poor baby
she'll manage just fine with one eye - I've ridden quite a few in my time and they've all been fine. Got one in the yard now that is blind in offside eye and he's perfectly happy.

hope she gets better soon

Oh Anastasia, I'm so sorry to hear about you're little one's start in life, hopefully she will make a full recovery and go on and live a happy life. My pony only had one eye and he jumped like a stag and did all the pony club games without any problems.

What were/are your hopes for this particular foal?

Oh how sad - I can't find words to express better than that. Just so sorry for all concerned.

That is so sad, will be keeping everything crossed that she will make a good recovery. Atleast losing an eye so young she will grow up with it so should adapt really well and have no reason not to have a perfectly normal life.
*Hugs to all*

oh bless big hugs to you. you'll be surprised how quickly she adapts to losing the eye. its horrible i know but its actually easier for them to learn adaptation at this age than if she lost the eye further down the line. big hugs and keep your chin up!

OMG how awful. Poor little thing. just some words of reasurance really... I know im not a horse but I too lost an eye during a freek incident. The symptoms you talk of that your baby is experiencing are all normal for someone/ something that has lost an eye. Not many people understand the consequences of loosing an eye other than loss of peripheral vision. Loosing an eye affects your distance and depth perception. It takes a few months for your brain to adjust but it does. Her disorientation is probably down to her not being able to judge where things are, but that will improve in time. Dont be too worried by reports of her bumping into things, even things she should be able to see. She will be able to see them, just not judge how far away they are from her. Whether she is a horse or a human the experiences are just the same. I know this might not seem the right thing to say but it will have gone in her favour that she has lost it so young. It is much easier and the brain adapts so much quicker when they have not had the time to adapt to two eyes. She will not remember what it was like to have two eyes, as i cant, having had two for 30 years! Im sure the vets did everthong they could to save her eye. The problem is when one eye receives severe trauma, if left in can cause blindness in the other eye ( sympathetic opthalmia )
Just some more words of comfort really.... once my eye had been taken out i felt no real pain. I was expecting it too be so painful but once i had the operation the pain went away. I hope this is the same for the little one. The healing will happen alot quicker than you think and she will be with you sooner than you know it.
****** big hugs sent ********* Praying for her quick recovery, and although it certainly is a worrying time the long term prognosis of her living with one eye is better than most think

Thank you all for your kind words. I dont normally post bad news but I just feel so deflated and sad today.

Weezy, we too cannot believe it. We thought with Sugababe born that all of last years horrors was finally finished............but how wrong we were.

I just feel so sick in my stomach at the thought of what will go wrong now. I know I have to try and keep positive but after last year and now Sugababe it is terribly hard to do this.

Stinkbomb, I am so sorry to hear about your loss of an eye as well. How terrible that must have been for you. Thank you so much for taking the time to explain to me what she will be going through, that has helped and will be comfort to us when she comes home.

Its just been such a shock for us. Last year we had such a bad time of it and it was hard to pick ourselves up again. Thankfully due to the wonderful family and friends we have, they kept us going and looking to the future again, but this has just knocked us back again.

I keep telling myself to stop feeling sorry for myself and that there are people much worse off............but sometimes us humans cannot help it......

. I just get so attached to all my four legged friends............

But again thanks to all who have taken the time to post with words of comfort.....it means a lot.........

I am so sorry to hear about your foal. Fingers crossed they make a speedy recover and are back in the UK in no time at all

I know exactly how you feel.... I too had a really bad years ( in fact two!! ) its really hard to pick yourself up when you have had so many bad things happen. Once all the treatment and recovery is over the only thing you will notice with Sugarbabe is that there is a space where her eye was. Nothing else will be different. She will adapt to one eye and i promise you will hardly notice, either in looks as you will get used to it, or by what she does. Many of my friends even forget im blind on one side because i dont act it.
You have every right to feel sorry for yourself, our animals mean so much to us. At the end of the day they are family

Try not to let it knock you back too far x

Oh no thats not good news

I really hope she is ok!!

I dont think having one eye is a bad thing though, especially seen as she lost it so young she will adjust a lot quicker and i think it will give her character.

Still not nice for you though

I am so sorry to hear this, but if it helps, old Cairo does perfectly well with one eye and indeed plays on this when asking for the sympathy vote and treats.

I do hope that there is nothing more serious than the loss of the eye, which whilst terrible, will not prevent her from having an enjoyable life.

Thanks again for everybodys support. I am phoning the Vet Hospital in Germany later today (can only phone between the hours of 2 - 4 pm). So I am hoping she is making steady progress.

Thanks again, as the support really helped perk me up yesterday.
