Yesterday I tried to clip my difficult horse with my brand new Lister Star clippers. I have only used them once since buying last year because my boy just seems to hate them!! So much so that I have 3 times had him clipped by an expert (He still needs twitching though) Yesterday I didn't get the twitch on him as he's got so difficult to twitch. After 20 or so minutes of being OK he went ballistic, struck out with a lightning kick, something he's never done before and got the clippers and my leg - OOWWW. He's broken them beyond repair - fortunately not my leg!!

I have read that a few people have found them too hot. This has been the problem that has put me off using them as my grey has very sensitive skin. The shop where I bought them had been really helpful and told me to loosen the tension but it didn't really make any difference. Has anyone else had a problem with them???

I clipped my horse with my brand new pair 2 weeks ago, it was the first time she'd every been clipped at was perfect, but I did find that they did run slightly hot, we were oiling every 10 mins, but every 20 mins we had to turn them off and give them five mins to cool!

My horse is a s*d to clip so this year I splashed out on a pair of Lister Liberty clippers. He was an angel. Could not believe the difference. I still had problems with his head and top of his neck but did his full clip in 40 minutes and it doesn't look bad at all. Well worth the money.

To try to stop your clippers running hot, dip them into a tub of methalated spirits every 10 -15 mins then oil as per norm, keep them running in the meths this seems to keep the blades cooler

Dont want to alarm you, but get your horse sedated next time, it simply isnt worth the risk, a good friend of mine lost their eye due to a horse kicking the clippers in to it.

Thank you for your replies! Well, I don't think that I will be replacing my clippers in the near future, its been an expensive lesson. If I'd known that the blades got so hot I would never have bought them with a difficult horse, its made the problem much worse. It never used to happen with my ancient liveryman arena ones, but I did have another horse then!
