Well I suspected this was coming...have had the vet out a few times due to horse collapsing randomly, posted on here a couple of times as it was a wierd one. Anyway she also has arthritis, and last night he came out and said she has narcolepsy. This combined with the arthritis has resulted in instant retirement - a 12 yo ex racer who was coming on really well.

"Fortunately" she came from a rescue centre who have said they will take her back asap, however their vet will check her over and she will be put down if the narcolepsy is a risk to anyone. Have explained my vet has ok'd her as paddock sound but I suppose they have to think of the handler's safety first. Am gutted - a year of blood (literally), sweat and tears and all for nothing. Still, I suppose that's part of the game with horses isn't it.

Oops meant to add, the only reason I'm not keeping her just as a companion is that I already have my two childhood ponies in happy retirement, need something to ride and can't stretch to 4 horses I'm afraid!...she is a lovely horse and it's such a shame.

It so sad isn't it? I had a horse who used to do a similar thing, and our biggest worry that he would do it in the stable and damage himself big time.

If he had been able to be kept out 24/7 then we may have kept him. But ultimately he was pts.

I'm so sorry for you. My horse also has narcolepsy however she is still rideable. It never nice to see, although she has never fully collapsed in front of me.
xxx

very sorry to hear that. horses can be so gutting at times. at least you didn't get physically hurt when she collapsed. i wouldn't ride one with that condition, tbh. hope the rescue centre do whatever's best for the horse.
very best of luck finding another one you can go and have lots of good times with.

So sorry to hear this. Just remember the year you've spent working with each other is not for nothing, I'm sure you've learnt and she's learnt, and you've had some good times together xxx

Narcolepsy is a pain as obviously the horse can't be ridden, but compared with some of the other things it might have been - isn't so bad! At least your horse can have a nice retirement at the home. Shame you are so far away as I have a very nice ex-racer I haven't got time for!
