Read this a few days ago. I hope that it serves as a warning to those who 'just' do a shrot ride without their hat. It is not worth the risk. I feel so sorry for the family.
16year old girl riding without a hat tonight; I told her about this story and she just shrugged her shoulders at me and carried on. Unbelievable and total disregard for human life. This story a poor young life was ended in a tragic accident and then a young girl of similar age is their flauting hers..
What a horrid situation. It just goes to show that no matter how safe you think your horse is you should always wear a hat. A sweaty head is much preferable to the alternative.
I really feel for her mother who obviously saw the whole thing.
a friend of mine died after falling from a horse onto the road she WAS wearing a hat but the impact was just above her right ear as the hat was fairly old it didn't save her she died a week later .
i replaced my hat after she died as it made me think about the safety of mine.
I've never ridden without a hat since not that it saved my friend but why take a chance ???
at the end of the day, you can take every precaution possible, but accidents happen... and the only absolute precaution we can take is to stop riding. Rotational falls don't just happen in the eventing world... they happen on an every day level, in back yard barns and livery yards. People get kicked, and accidents happen.
It's a fact of life in the horse world, and I think that we take that chance every time we get out of our cars at the yard... but at the end of the day, we do it because for most of us, our live wouldn't be complete without it...
I agree lakeside_dreamer but we should take as many precautions as possible to avoid accidents. A life was taken maybe or maybe not because she wasn't wearing a hat.
That poor family
