Vet just came, elly will only ever be a light hack and she might not even hold up to that.

My poor gorgeous girl. She is only 7 and she had so much potential. Just can't believe one kick can cause all this.

Not sure what to do, I so so want to improve my riding and get out and do stuff, but I look at Elly and just think I can't part with her.

IT'S NOT ******* FAIR!!!!

Vent over, off to cry on OH shoulder....

(((Hugs))) to you! I am sure you will do what you feel is best for you and Elly. What has the vet diagnosed?

Life is so unfair at times

am so sorry to hear this my horse was a light hack at the age of 8 and he was retired at the age of 13 this year could you not loan and still keep elly aswell

I am so very sorry to read your news - I lost my wonderful 7 yo a few years ago, a mad moment in the field left him with such an injury to his DDFT that he couldnt even be given an early retirement.

My thoughts are with you.

thanks for the hugs!
It's a long story but she was kicked and fractured her splint bone two years ago. Her suspensory was also damaged around where the fracture was, and the bone has healed in a really jagged sort of way so the more work she does the more the ligamanets will rub against the jagged parts of the bone and just make things worse.
She had another scan tonight and the ligament damage hasn't improved since she was scanned last october. Vet was great and was really straight and honest with me and said how sorry he was but that the chances of any improvement now are very remote.
I am lucky in that my YO is letting me ride her lovely mare whenever I want, but it's not the same as having your own. My OH has been great and said we can keep Elly forever if I want to and eventually look for another one, but it's just the cost of keeping two because El is on livery.
Think I just need to let it settle in and then I'll think straight. I just can't get over how this has all happened. I only had her for two weeks before she was kicked. I suppose it's just part and parcel of horses, it's just hard to accept!

I am facing the prospect of something similar with my 8 year old....

(((hugs and wine))) xxx

Sorry to hear this. My horse is a light hack only after tearing both front DDFTs, aged 14. It does seem like the end of the world at the time, I cried most of the way home from the vets, and I know what you meant about it just not being the same riding other horses.

My horse has touch wood been sound since her mri scan and I feel lucky that I can at least still hack her out, but when you see other people tearing about and jumping it does feel REALLY bloody unfair.

I can't afford another one either.

It probably will take a good couple of weeks of feeling utterly sh*t about it before you feel better I think. Go and pour yourself some wine and read a good book, just to take your mind off it for tonight.

Is it worth looking for somewhere cheaper to keep her on livery, just out 24/7, in a small herd? Somewhere like with that lady who keeps the random groups of horses at the top of our yard. It might even be worth talking to her - horses out 24/7, not huge amounts of grass so she wouldn't get too fat, plenty of horses to keep her company and bar two of them, nothing ever leaves the field.

yeah Sar I was thinking of looking for somewhere cheaper because I don't need all of Aston's facilities. I might just put her on grass livery at Aston for the winter because the grazing is good all year and then find somewhere for her in the spring.
Lisa - he didn't mention an op, but I'm not sure whether that's because the ligament damage has already been done.
Thanks for hugs everybody, and sending lots of (((((hugs))))) to everyone in the same boat! xxxxx

It's definitely worth talking to that lady at our place who has all of the horses at the top, or even the new people in the house as their horse looks like he could do with company.
As always, you're more than welcome to ride Monty whenver you like but I know it's not the same as your own x
