I have agreed to let my Sharer take my horse out with the Mendips. To say I'm an over-protective mother to my 4 legged baby is possibly an understatement.

So I've been looking for positive posts on here to affirm that I've done the right thing by agreeing to it.

Obviously I'm not riding, but will be helping transport, prepare & put away, and I'll be the one with the hip flask.

Any advice or tips? What should I expect? How do I follow the hunt in my car? And definately any POSITIVE stories?

you'll/sharer/horse will be fine!

i did this a few weeks ago - sent a friernd who wanted to go hunting out on my horse - this is a horse i really don't let many people get on at the mo until she's schooled more as bad hands can set her back a good few weeks!! but i know friend rides well and similar to me so i decided to gift her a day on HRH!!

she loved it! i could see she was holding her up too much to begin with and they were fighting each other a bit but as soon as she relaxed they both did and the smiles on friends face was worth every minute of me panicing and being an over protective mother!! lol

horse also enjoyed it and they both came back tired but happy

My tips would be, rather boringly, don't just take a hip flask but a bottle of ready diluted squash or water - I always get so thirsty out hunting and would kill for a thirst quencher. I've never hunted with the mendip so not sure how easy it is to see much from a car/on foot. You'll find all the other car followers so introduce yourself and I'm sure they'll be very friendly and point you in the right direction.

Remember your sharer might be a bit nervous too so try not to show your nerves but above all else remember that your horse will LOVE you for letting him go, I truly believe that hunting is probably the most generous gift to a horse that an owner can give.

The other thing I love is giving your horse a lovely warm bath afterwards to wash away all that itchy sweat and mud - horses seem to really love having their itchy faces washed off. And then it goes without saying that he'll want a lovely day off afterwards, turned out so as to stretch out his aching muscles. I would imagine he'll behave perfectly if he's never been out before, he's more likely to get a bit silly and excited on the 2nd or 3rd time out.

I hope your sharer, your horse and you all have a lovely day
