I got a horrible fright this afternoon when I was hacking Ali out on the road. We were walking along the road when he just fell down to his knees and hocks, he didn't slip, he just went straight down without any warning :( I began panicking, but thankfully he got back up calmly and seemed fine when I walked him on to see if he had injured himself. Fortunately he just has a little cut on his knees, and was fine afterwards.

This has never happened before, but I have heard of similar incidents due to narcolepsy, which really worries me. Should I get any tests done, as it was a bizarre thing to happen as a 'once off' :(

Any advice or opinions?

Are you SURE he didnt slip or trip?

If it was a one off I wouldnt worry. Narcolepsy is VERY rare.

Scary though!!!

I don't know if all narcoleptics show the same symptoms but my friends horse would go down and stay down, he didn't get up straight away. His eyes used to roll up and he really wasn't with it.

It was when he went down and stayed down for 35 mins that they decided to retire him. It was only at this point that the vet saw it as the practice wasn't too far away, up to that point, they only suspected narcolepsy.

couldn't of been the heat maybe? not sure where you live
Definitely not today - Over here it was about 16 degrees and raining when I was out!

I know very little about narcolepsy, but what happened today has really worried me if it may be leading to something more serious :(

I was going to say heat too ?? - I have one who is overreaching badly at the moment and never normally does, i'm putting it down to her getting tired quicker because of the heat,

sorry just saw your last post, obviously not heat then, hope you get to the bottom of it.
