My little Welsh A mare is very sensitive around her ears but recently she has seemed very panicky about me putting her bridle on. I cant even hold them to look in (aside from the fact they are teeny tiny ears anyway with lots of fluff). Its definitely her ears, seems very sensitve. We have had 3 years and she gets laminitis easily but other than that she seems healthy. So what would sensitive ears mean? Any ideas?

could be the flies have got in them and irritated them or fungus, my old gelding had fungus and that attracted the flies, i had to undo the cheek piece to put the bridle on and could only treat them if he was twitched or sedated. Best to let the vet have a look or if your confident try twitching her muzzle and give them a good clean with cotton wool and something like hibi scrub (mind not to get water in her ears though) then apply some thing like yellow summer fly cream or canistone.

Does she have Aural Plaques, ie the white blobs. Most horses aren't bothered by these but a small percentage are to the point that you have to dismantle the bridle to get it on.

My friends horse has these and we have been using Dermafas

You have to get it from the US and its cheaper to get 4 tubs in one go. It works though. The first time we put it in his ears I had to twitch and sedate him. Within a week I was using a headcollar and treats only. Its a slow process as they anticipate pain but we are getting there.
