Im taking the gruesome twosome to a charity dog show, fundraiser thing on Sunday and one of the classes is 'Most impressive trick'

... Now I have two days to teach Tyson something really cool to win that class. Im highly competative and I'll be really pi**ed off If I dont manage it :p:D:D
Suggestions? I wanted to teach him to 'die' so when I point my finger gun at him and say BANG, he flops over - but I think that may be a bit beyond our capabilities :o

Secondly - My friend and dog walker extrodinaire has a stall at said show and I said I would bake some doggie cakes for her, but all the recipes I can find online seem like they have things that aren't so good for doggies tummies in them.
Can anyone recommend a nice dog friendly cake/biscuit recipe?

TIA :D:D:D

Hi, easy recipe to make and the dog loves it, not as smelly as liver cake when you are making it and you can dice and put in bags tied with pretty ribbons/bows to sell.

1 can tuna in oil, 1 egg, 80gm plain flour

Mix well and microwave for about 4 mins.
Cool, slice and dice.
Easy as pie

My dog picked up the bang/drop dead trick quickly but then he loves his food. Another suggestion is the walking/weaving through your legs as seen on Britains Got talent. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Can I ask how you taught your mutt the bang/dead trick?

and thanks for the recipe! :) X

Cheers m'dears. Tyson is anti wheat, but I guess most other dogs prolly aint :p
Any other trick ideas? I want something megga cool and impressive and awesome. Im trying to teach him to give me 5, then give me 10 and then give me 20 but hes just getting confused and smacking me round the face with his gigantic feet :o

Can I ask how you taught your mutt the bang/dead trick?

My daughter put in the work for this trick and from a 'down' she wafted a treat so he lay on his side and stroked him till he put his head on the floor. As soon as his head hit the floor she said 'bang' and gave him the treat. Then introduced the fingers signal with the word. It's not quite perfect as his tail doesn't stop wagging but still has the wow factor.

Teach him left and right?

Have a treat in one closed hand, and hold both hands out (dog sitting in front of you). As he noses the hand with the treat in it, say 'left!' or 'right!' depending on which hand it is - you can either make this his left or right, or your left or right. With repetition you should be able to no longer have a treat in your hand, but say left/right and have him nose the appropriate hand for a treat.

You can build this up by then teaching the dog to distinguish your left from his left. So for Henry, when I say left or right he noses the hand on his left or right, but when I say 'My left' or 'my right' he noses the left or right hand from my perspective (I hope that makes sense).

Henry picked this up quickly, so it can't be that hard:p but it does look cute!

KatieLou taught Abe to 'read' but Henry found that really hard to grasp:rolleyes:

I taught my dog to lick her nose when I say 'lick' - probably doesn't have a showring wow factor but makes everyone laugh!

I'd love to get her to sneeze on command too but we're struggling with that!

Ditto the tuna cake recipe, only put it in some plastic containers to microwave (takeaway containers are good) to a depth of about a centimetre, microwave until firm - it usually takes about two minutes at that depth - and turn out to cool. Cut into shapes with cookie cutters, put on a baking sheet and bake at a low temperature until dried out into biscuits. :)

I make it with rice flour, the texture is slightly different but it works (and the texture of the original is somewhat akin to car tyres anyway :p).

What about following you- as in sit stay- you walk away- he follows, until you look round then he stops too?

Stand on his front paws? prolly to big!
Or this

look at vids 1 and 13.....
although would you be able to move if Ty was stood on your toes?

You could teach him to count?
NO CLUE how you would teach that tho!

Actually the collie in vid 14 is pretty impressive!

Years ago I did a best trick class with Bear and made her balance a treat on her nose and wait -the judge gave us first place coz she'd never seen a retriver wait to eat food before :D It was a very long time ago though, I think I was about 14/15 at the time!

I taught my old Lab to shake when I was grooming her. Lots of loose hair and a very waggy dog. We also had one who would die for her country but she wagged her tail when "dead" too.

He is a big kid and thinks it is basically the best trick he has ever head of.

He is still 'Shooting' the dog and she is still looking at him like he has gone mad but 'Bang!' is now producing 'Wooooooooooof!' .... so much for my quiet day :p

Bit of a hijack (sorry)!
But are you going to Hylands park on sunday?
Im taking Bob, although not any classes as he has a purple ear after he lost a chunk of it yesterday and i purple sprayed it! Want to try the 'have a go agility' tho.
If you see a little terrier with a purple head say hi :-)

I did some judging at a family fun show a while ago, and if there had been a dog with a purple head, I would have given it first place:D

Sorry to highjack thread, but Im also going to a charity dog show in 2 weeks time. Classes like best bitch, young handler, best gundog etc.
My 10yr old niece is going to show my lab. Ive never shown a dog so can anyone tell me what's expected and tips on prep. Also whilst she's a lab, she's not gundog trained although naturally retrieves obviously.
Any advise appreciated.....

As for trick, my lab learnt to crawl in 10minutes, get them to lie down, wave a treat under their nose whilst saying crawl..... You may have to use a guiding hand on their back the first few times, but they soon get it

Well, the one we ran was very much a family show, not at all serious. We would ask the handlers to walk around the ring together to see them move, then line them up and go over the dogs one by one while talking to the handlers. We were looking for good natures and good health - so not fat, bright eyes, shiny coats, easy movement etc.:)

Thanks spudlet... Think we can meet that criteria :-)
My poor niece, she's pony mad, and last time she showed my Shetland in hand she had him in a head lock in the line up (he was a bit naughty and very buzzy) sadly he's lame at the mo, so theres a HAPPA show over the bank holiday with a dog section :-)

Yes I am going to Highlands Park! I'll keep my eyes peeled for purple headed terriers, but if you see anyone getting dragged around by an American bulldog & an odd looking gsd x do come and say hi :)
