Can I just pop my running martingale on the noseband to use as a standing just to see if it makes a difference before I buy one....if so do I need to tape the 2 ends together first ?:)

As far as I am concerned a standing martingale is a dangerous contraption.
If horse is rearing, it can cause horse to fall over.
Don't know what else it is used for.

And yet they are commonly used in North America and no one dies. :)

To the OP, you can use it to try before you buy BUT make sure you can adjust it properly as most are not long enough off this. If you want you can use a piece of heavy elastic or elastic bandage tied through the rings and the noseband.

If it's adjusted properly the horse isn't going to hit it unless your nose is in danger. It is NOT to be used to pull the head down, EVER. But if I change a piece of tack and I'm concerned I pop the horse on the longe line for a minute to test it out on its own.

Thanks...I will pop her on the longe tomorrow to make sure shes ok with it :)

Yes its fine, just make sure its not too short.

Horses can fall over if they rear regardless of a standing martingale... they're less likely to be able to rear high enough to get over backwards with one on, I've never understood that argument against them!

I used io use standing martingales all the time for riding away young horses .
They are an excellent and underused piece of kit.
And yes I have used a running as a makeshift standing when the standing was too small.

I jump my mare in a correctly fitted standing martingale, one broken collarbone was eno thank you!

Def good idea to try on the ground first, and no problem adapting running as a trial go.

Personally I prefer the elasticated type one, but personal choice

well mare seems to accept it no probs and more so than a running...I don't think she likes the pressure on her mouth of the running, I didn't realise you could leave them on for jumping ! im off to google where I can buy one... any recommendations welcome...have looked on ebay but look rather cheap ! :)

I prefer a standing to a running, personally. The standing doesn't come into action until the horse puts his head up too high, a running can affect the action of the bit.

Once upon a time any young horse was ridden in a standing martingale.

a horse is as likely to fall over wearing one as not wearing one. I have a rearing who used to flip and now I ride him happily (touch wood!) in one. As a kid in the 80s we used to hunt loads of horses and ponies for a dealer and they were a standard bit of tack.

I use an elasticated standing now on my ex-rearer and I love it.
