Hi,

My horse strained her check ligament last October, was boxed until early January but with daily walks out 6 weeks after the injury onwards. She was then brought back into work very slowly once she was turned out in Jan. She has been completely sound doing fast canter, gallop etc. with no problems.

She's come recently though with slightly odd paces, just not herself in walk and in trot, but it is more noticeable in walk. She is also tripping over quite a lot. And every 8/9 strides or so in walk are sometimes (but not consistently) lame, i.e. she can't put weight on leg. There is also very slight swelling just under knee - her original injury was front right and this is on her front left, which also looks like the leg she is lame on.

Worst case scenario for me is that she has done the check ligament of her left leg, although perhaps less severely than her original injury as it's very slight swelling and only a tiny bit lame, whereas in October she was hopping lame. I've cold hosed but turned her out as she doesn't run around ridiculously and don't want it to swell more being in. Can anyone tell me if they think this is likely to be her check ligament? She's 15 but wasn't worked until she was 12 and has never been lame or sorry until last October.
Thanks for any advice x

Mine was never lame with his check ligament tear he just wasn't right in himself. Still had a tear big enough to earn 6 months box rest. In your case I would speak to your vet, its not worth the risk of moving on a potentially damaged check.

mine was never lame at the time either, just has a tiny swelling, that was last july, still not right.
