very smelly oozing puss lump?? can you help.

Hi found what was a hard lump on inside of my mums new pony's hind leg, between hock and fetlock on the bone, it felt like dried on mud so tried edging bits off then a bit of fur pulled off with some skin and the smell was disqusting, like rotting flesh and oozing small amounts of puss. Washed it all down with warm water and cleaned it up and a few more rotten bits came away, it now looks like a sore raised wound that started bleeding.
Trying to avoid any vets bills what would anyone reccomend putting on it to kill any infection and help it dry up and heal? x

Wash it with warm salt water twice a day, and clip all the hair surrounding the area away.

If no improvement within a few days I'd call the vet.
