found what looked like a hard dried on mud patch on inside of hind leg on my mums new pony, tried edging the mud off a chunk of fur came off with some skin that was very very smelly and oozing puss underneath, cleaned it all off with warm water and cold hosed and removed all the old puss filled scab, can anyone reccomend anything to put on it to kill any infection and help it dry and heal, really cant afford a vets bill. x

Hmm difficult without a picture. Bad smell usually indicates nasty anaerobic bacteria, they should hopefully die now scab removed. I use iodine savlon spray, but my two are quite brave and you may get kicked by a nervous type as it stings! Chorhexidine spray is good too and less stingy, also by savlon.

To be honest as its on the leg I would maybe get the vet, better a bill than a lame pony! You may need antibiotics.

Depends where on the leg it is. If it can be bandaged use animalintex to draw the puss out. If it's higher up then use warm water and epsom salt to bathe it. Never ever cold hose any open wounds as this can cause proud flesh to form. Put a picture up of the wound if you can!!

I'm sorry but I am going to say the obvious - why has your mum got a new pony if you can't afford vets bills? What if the pony gets seriously injured?

Without a picture you can't expect us to say what this is. Do you have an experienced friend who could have a look for you?
