I really feel the need to moan!

Sorry. I have had 2 instances in the past 2 weeks personally, twinned with my friends near death experience the other day on the heath – I am officially on the moan path so to speak!

1. Hacking. Now, I was trotting my boy along a path on Sunday when 2 girls galloped past on the path which is about 5 meters to the left – causing my horse to nap and gallop off. Now I tried to stop him but I couldn’t – so I had to yell at them to pull up – which they didn’t do till I had screamed some swear words (in a calm manner, as so not to wide my horse up even more!) Something similar happened to my friend who was out on her loopy chestnut – the LOCAL RIDING SCHOOL trotted past her then went into a charge causing her horse to screw buck and bolt and her to come off – and they didn’t even stop!
2. The second one is the warm up at BSJA shows (don’t know about other shows…) OH MY GOD whatever happened to left to left, not stopping on the track, walking round on an inside track and actually looking around and being aware of your surroundings? I had to ask 2 girls who had stopped for a chat on the track to move the other day, as well as getting very frustrated by the people walking round 3 abrest in walk – it’s a competition…not a social event!

OK, please give your opinions! Rant over, I am sorry (though I do feel a bit better now!)

i know what you mean about left to left, when i was warming up Archie on sunday (at his first comp) people kept heading straight for me, i kept screaming 'left to left' at them, but noone takes the blind bit of notice. They wouldve been the first to complain if he'd flipped out and scared their horse. Also people that stand by the gate/fence on the track chatting, and walk on the outside track do my head in....

As for what happened to you/your friend out hacking, thats awful, i cant believe people are so disrespectful

yup to the left to left and lets have a chat as we walk around arena...

i'm going to put red and green ribbon in bonnie's tail this w/end, so if she does kick - and she can - then it's their own fault for not looking!!!

oh - and wandering in front of a practice fence when you are approaching - or worse, some over zelous helper altering a fence without looking at who is coming!

F8ck off out of hte way you tw*t is a well used expression!!!

Bx

Agree entirely about the left to left rule in the warm-up. It's ridiculous that people don't follow it !

I have to say though, that having got back on Bo this weekend, and thus been jumping the slightly bigger and therefore later classes, the carnage in the warm-up was far less than it was when were out jumping BN and Disco

I guess there are fewer riders jumping the bigger classes, and *perhaps* they are a little more experienced...although that isn't always the case lol!

There are lots of inconsiderate riders around, and drivers. I find that very few people slow down for horses, some even rev and beep and go through puddles at speed soaking us!

The other day I took my 4yr old out for his first hack with my sister on her pony, and 2 riders apporached riding side by side so that we had to go into the muddy field to get past. This upset my sisters horse somewhat, and with the additional excitement of seeing other horses she was a little fidgety, and they had the cheek to comment about 'bad manners and shouldn't be allowed on the road'

shows can be a nightmare, i only compete unaffiliated, but at the 2 local places at the moment there is no practice ring, at one it was completely flooded and people were warming up in the indoor school while others were walking the course (a little dangerous imo!) and at the other they had a churned up muddy and partially flooded field. add to this peoples complete unawareness of their surroundings (bad grammar I know lol) and horses playing up and its a recipe for disaster!

(sorry for the rant, my 8 mile drive to work this morning took over an hour and I'm still in a strop aws a result!)

Totally agree with you on the left to left in collecting rings, some people are just so ignorant too. Also changing fences when you are approaching, why do they never look at what is happening.....

The hacking incident is terrible, so inconsiderate and dangerous........

I used to find it awful when I went to junior SJ at college - the PC lot took over, screaming at their mummies to put the jump up to 3'6" quickly, or the 2' class they were entered for would be over... tiny tots were being led round on shetlands to 'gain competition experience'... get in the way more like! If ever I put a jump down to a sensible height, I would be cantering towards it and some twit or other would put it up a foot right in front of me... and school rules? No, didn't know the meaning!
I find my local unaff dressage much better as a result of seeing the junior SJ! Generally it's quite quiet in the warm-up. I think having a stonking great big mw ID helps, people tend to get out of your way quicker!
My major thing about shows is that when you're indoors and there is no viewing area, people tend to stand at the school door and watch. Which is annoying if you've just asked your helper to move as your horse is spooking at them, and someone else appears at the door wondering why I'm spooking at them and glaring at them... I just wish I could yell at them to move!

Agree with you on both counts - hacking wise we have a lady round here who has no consideration for other horses and riders. We all know each other round here, so she knows which horse is a newly backed youngster, a nervous horse, a pony getting used to its new child rider, but still insists on doing stupid things like riding right up their backsides or trotting or cantering past them at speed

.

The warm-up thing bugs me as well - can't decide whether it is just ignorance or total thoughtlessness

My pet hates are :

1. People putting up fences in the warm up ring to way over ther height of the current class.
mad.gif

2. Riders wandering around 2 or 3 abreast chatting when people are trying to warm up.
mad.gif

3. Riders totally oblivious to everything happening around them & wandering across the back of a jump while someone is coming in to jump it.
mad.gif

3. Ignorance & rudeness

Oh goodness! I could go on and on about collecting ring etiquette, or lack of it. Most people here are in the ring with their trainers, so I can count on BOF to keep the fence at the correct height, but there's always someone who keeps trying to bump it up (there was a crosspole class for the tiddlers once and some basstad kept putting the fences up to about 3'4") and what about people stopping in front/behind the jump for a chat or just to watch the class? Not to mention the riders who can't steer and ride across/into you blindly...

....and the riders who come out of the ring after a really bad round then 'beast' their horses over practise fences again and again to teach them a 'lesson', oblivious to those who are trying to warm up for their round.... (Indoor and outdoor, tho)

I HATE INDOOR COLLECTING-RINGS!!! There is only one real solution for me. I have given-up indoor SJ for the foreseeable future as I just can't be doing with it - it ruins an otherwise enjoyable sport. Roll on the outdoor season...more room to warm up and for some reason people seem to be more polite!

Hacking - I get annoyed when you have some doddery old person infront of you who when you ask nicely if you can come past screams abuse at you. They are doing the snails pace walk and however hard you try your horse can't put one foot in front other with a little rest in the middle.

There are a few places with really good indoor warm up areas, Royal Leisure in Sussex being one of them .... but completely agree with everything that's been said. I thought recently that things are getting so bad, with people not observing the left-to-left rule, etc, and weaving in front of jumps, that shows should really start to employ warm-up area stewards, who could "police" this sort of thing. But then that's going to push up the cost for everyone ... What they could do is to have clear rules about maximum numbers allowed in the warm-up area at any one time, and a reminder about the etiquette for warming up - and maybe also on jump height? (No higher than the next class?) I don't know the answer, but I do know that things are getting worse!

Oh, yes Royal Leisure I remember wasn't a bad venue - sadly it is too far away to get to regularly. I have been put off by my Duckhurst experiences!
Jump heights are marked on warm-up fences for BE but i guess with more classes at the average SJ comp it would be harder to control this..

Yep! Very annoying at shows and its not just BSJA! Told one girl once that if she continued to pass me so closely (touching my stirrup as she passed) cutting me up that she would get kicked and she looked at me with such an evil look!!!

There are already rules in place regarding the height of practice fences at BSJA shows....no higher than the class currently running...but unless there is someone to police it nobody ever bothers

I agree RL is one of the better warm-ups, but even that can get chaotic during the smaller classes with huge entries

When I had no horse and was playing groom for my sister I just couldn't keep my mouth shut. I would 'police' the practice ring sorting out the jump and be the one rounding up whoever was next to jump. At one show a few weeks ago 2 women had phoned and said they were running late and to hold the class for them, and they didn't even rush, they stopped for a cigarette on the way over and wandered along chatting while all the poor kids were waiting in the pouring rain. Then they decided not to jump it anyway!!! I hate it when its so disorganised!

I would never do anything other than walk up to another horse, there are some people, one women springs to mind, who thinks its fine to trot or canter up behind or towards other horses and even pass them at high speed. I'm quite happy to let people pass but would expect them to walk until they are out of sight. I have been told by other riders who have raced towards or up behind my nervy pony that I shouldn't ride her out on the bridleways if I am not in control enough to let people trot/canter past or gallop off in front. It really really annoys me that people are so inconsiderate of other riders!

Have to agree with the BSJA warm up - some places are worse than others for it and it REALLY gets my goat!!

[/ QUOTE ]

I would have to say that in my experience, the worst warm-ups have always been the unaffiliated ones...and particularly at PC events

At least at a BSJA event everyone is (usually) trying to jump the fences in the same direction
