I took my orange whirlwind out BDing for the first time in 7 months yesterday as a 'see how we get on' before the Regionals

She actually warmed up fantastically, she was so loose and through that this was a big achievement in itself as she has been known to almost throw herself on the floor in a busy warm up. However, as we walked into the arena she turned into a whirling orange vision. She would not go past the judges box, then she would not go past some people in the cafe and finally would not go past the stands.

The judge kindly gave me time to get her around the arena once, but as we went up the centre line, she just froze at the judge's box and tensed right up. However, compared to past competitions, I actually softened her very very quickly and although we had a few spooks here and there in the test, the 'softness' was easy to get back after these.

She came 4th on 65.4% (very low marking judge leaving most people in 50%s

) so I was pleased with her. But because she had been so spooky, I decided to do the Novice just to get her back in the arena.

She was 10 times worse

She plunged and spooked the whole way around, was so tense and stressy that I considered retiring before she had even entered the area. As she went up the centre line, she relaxed completely, did a nice halt and then trot off but again as she came closer to the judge's box she tensed and froze

She had some good moments in the Novice and some really bad ones (collected canter on a 10m circle which was supposed to be trot because we have been working on collecting the canter at home and I used my leg in the wrong way on the circle) but again, despite everything (and a shocking mark of 58.5%) I was actually pleased with her because she was really through and loose in the good bits.

However, this spooking is really bad and needs to be sorted...

She is not on a calmer, and is fed Healthy Hoof, TopSpec Balancer, Cool and Condition Cubes, Super Conditioning Flakes and Speedi Beet (I struggle keeping weight on her and she is a very fussy eater... this is the only combination so far that actually makes her eat the whole feed). She cannot go onto a mix of any sort as she comes out in huge lumps all over her body and she also cannot have pure Alfa A for this reason too.

So... HELP!!!!

I wouldnt change her food, shes not been out for 7months so its not surprising shes spooky. Before that her competition experiences havent been that many anyways (due to injury etc) so i dont think changing the food is the right thing to do. Also shes had time off whilst youve been away and whilst you havent been able to ride because of snow/ice so it really isnt surprising to be honest. You need to just concetrate on getting her out and competing as much as possible.

The thing is, she used to be really behind my leg, bucking and humping to the leg but was quieter competing. Since she has started enjoying her work so much and being sharp from the leg, she has become a plunging spooky loony out competing

I think she needs to get back into the groove.
Spooking is horrid I had it for years and years with my mare she was even spooky in my arena after 3 years!
For a calmer id try Horse First, its a great calmer so many ppl rave about it.
All I can suggest is stick her on that and go out as much as possible. At one stage I did around 3-4 tests in a week at different venues. It did help.

Thanks BBs... I have another competition with her this weekend and then the Regionals are 23rd Feb.

Do calmers work?

I am not competing to qualify or anything at the moment, just to get her back out again and relaxing. She is such a different mare now than she was just a few months ago that I know I can now keep her between my leg and hand and we will get there eventually

The only thing spoiling her tests now is the horrendous spooking!!!

i use the TopSpec calmer for my orange spooky thing - used to use it every day and now just use it before a big show but it does seem to help take the edge off him without taking away his sparkle.

Thanks... I looked into the Horse First one and sounds very good stuff. Going to look into its ingredients closely as possibly try some.

Star, I actually have some of the TopSpec one from some time ago, will try that initially as closest place to me that sells the Horse First one does not have any in sock currently.

I am taking her back out competing tomorrow, to the same venue so hopefully she will be marginally better having been there already once??? I just don't know what itis about judge's boxes, she has a real fear of them. At the Petplans she wouldn' go anywhere near them either!

mine doesn't think much of judges either. he esp hates them sitting at tables - that made him proper freak out, stop, spin and leg it at top speed!

Ha ha... Yes, my mare has a real phobia of judges (a bit like her owner!)

I have put her on the TopSpec while I had it in, so will give it a few weeks and see how it gets on. If there is no real improvement then I will try the Horse First one as have asked the feed merchant to get some in for me.
