Very swollen hock

Just a quick update for those interested... Leahurst called today and would like to do another flush under GA. I'm not sure but have put a call in to my vet to discuss.

I did suggest to them bringing him home now and monitoring the situation here, but they weren't keen.

Will see what to do later on today.

Long conversations with Leahurst and vet. It seems that Leahurst raised my hopes a bit and actually the prognosis is pretty poor.

Got to decide what to do. Honestly thought it wouldn't come to this - I am always pessimistic but really believed we'd beat this.

Vet has suggested PTS at Leahurst - am working today and tomorrow so can't get there to see him. Breaking my heart...

Foxygirl - I have been following your posts with my fingers crossed for your horse. My horse has had a recurring abscess and now has quite a swollen leg. I was seriously worried that he had an infection so called the vet this morning who thankfully put my mind at rest. Last night I was in floods of tears and so frightened that I would have to have him pts. I really do feel your pain and am so so sorry that the prognosis for your horse is poor.
Whatever your decision, you must take some comfort knowing you have done everything for him.
My thoughts are with you.

I'm really sorry to hear that !! Thinking of you and bo and what a horrible decision to have to make , in sure all vets involved will do there upmost to make sure bo,s welfare is most important , thinking of u , update when u feel able to x

I'm so sorry to read your update. Was really hoping you'd be able to get him home. We got to a really desperate stage with mine - the fact that we'd already spent so much money with the colic surgery as well almost made it easier to spend more - just so thankful my OH was willing and able to pay. A friend has also recently had one with a hock infection and she had to call it a day when the insurance ran out. It's heartbreaking. If you do have to pts I hope you get to say your goodbyes.
Mine was like a rollercoaster of emotion for 2 weeks - worry about the GA - better reading giving hope, worse reading causing despair, more worry about another GA and so on. I really can understand what you're going through.

Thank you all again so much for your support - it means a lot and it's a been a real comfort to me.

Up most of the night trying to work out what to do. Rang Leahurst this morning and they brought Bo out of the stable last night - he was more lame than he has been, walked him out this morning and he's even worse. Going there straight from work at 4pm to catch up with the vet and see Bo and talk about what to do. Maybe the fact he's so lame will make it easier to decide? I just don't know.

OH brilliantly supportive and offered to find the £££ BUT both my vet and Leahurst vet think we could throw thousands at this and because it's so aggressively infected, we still won't get rid of it. Also got to consider two small children and a massive mortgage :-(

Will post later once I've seen my boy.

Only you know what's right for your boy. If I had been making the decisions we had to make for one of the younger ones it would probably have been very different. My old guy is very relaxed about being away from home, treatment, GA's, box rest etc so the long road to recovery no biggie for him. Pretty sure the others would not be the same, so we would have decided accordingly. Will be thinking of you & Bo later.

Oh god, what a horrible situation to be in, my heart goes out to you ( hugs)
I dont know what else to say other than i hope he starts to pick up of his own accord and surprises everyone, but youve done your best by him and thats all you can do

FG - I really hoped there would be more positive news today for you.
Please don't feel bad about the financial constraints. You have done what you could which is more than a lot of folk would. I had already made the decision with mine that I couldn't afford surgery so I would have to pts if it came to it as I had no insurance. Thankfully I didn't have to send him for surgery.
Finances do have to be a consideration so don't beat yourself up for that. I am still praying for you but I know how devastated you must be feeling.

I visited Bo at Leahurst after work today and made the decision with the vet to have him put to sleep there.

Heartbroken to not be bringing him home to his field mate and so so sorry to have not been able to make everything better for him.

He was only 7 - such a waste of life.

Thank you all for your support - it really has helped me through one of the toughest weeks ever.

I have been following but had no advice to really offer, I was dreading clicking on the post, such a tough decision but the right one for your boy, I am so sorry it ended this way despite everything being done for him.

Run free Bo RIP

So so sorry.
Take care of yourself - you have done all you could and have made the right decision for your boy.
RIP bo

Just read this as searching for hock problems on forum. I am so sorry to hear you lost your boy. What a terrible shock for you.
Sadly our girlie is in for flushing as she has sustained a horrible kick right on the point of the hock. We are possibly facing a similar scenario to you. So unfair :(
Just wanted to give a virtual hug to you. (())
Longdog xx

Have just read this as my friends horse is in the same boat at the moment. I am so sorry to read that you didnt have a happy outcome. Bo couldnt have wished for a more caring owner. Hugs to you and your family xxx
