Very thin people on horses?

I am extremely concerned about very very thin people riding horses especially if it is an extremely windy day or if they are attempting to jump.

Do they not realise the obvious dangers of them being blown off their horse as they only weigh the same as a twig or that when popping a fence they may float off into thin air!
Not the mention the fact that they are so very light that their poor horse may just forget that someone is riding them and just do their own thing!

I think this matter should be treated just as seriously as fat people riding and there should be a stop put to it at once. I am sick and tired of seeing thin people, in very expensive riding attire sat atop flightly horses staring down thier noses at us blobs on cobs!

Mark my words it is only a matter of time before a tragedy occurs!!!!

;)

I concur wholeheartedly!!

I have had to insist (insist mark you!) that D1 wears an Exo body protector just to ensure that she doesn't get knocked off by any stray puff of wind

Poor Dizzy..., when D1 has sat on her in the past Dizz looked to me in a most confused manner, as though to say "You're there, so what is pulling my bit from up top??". I had to explain and let Dizz sniff D1's foot, just so's she knew she wasn't going mad.

Talking of going mad.... :eek::eek::rolleyes::D:D:D

I think they should adopt wrist and ankle weights for their own safety, in addition to the usual hats and BP's.

This is a very serious issue imho.

very serious issue indeed.

HNH should do an article about it warning of that these happenings could take place.

I am so very glad to find that people are taking this matter seriously. I wonder if they could wear some kind of fat suit with weights in? Also another thing to consider is that unlike us wobbly people who bounce when we fall off surely they are much more at risk of just snapping?

Oh my you are going to start a storm in a teacup debate!! I'm sorry but I don't agree! I DO agree however if people are riding completely unsuitable horses that are just too flighty for them to control because it poses a danger to other people/horses but not that they are too thin to ride them! Weight doesn't have anything to do with it - it's ability and experience. An overweight person who rides nicely and is balanced in the saddle poses no problem at all to a suitable weight carrying horse - it's the ones that are overweight and cannot ride in a balanced fashion which will ultimately do damage to their horse. I am a 'thin person' and had for a long time a 16.2hh, ID x m/w and I know I looked like a pea on a pod but I could control him, even out hunting. I am stronger than I look. Quite a few people who were heavier than I couldn't even make him do a downward transition in the school whereas I found it easy. I now have just bought a 15.3hh, ISH who I know looks good underneath me but I am still 'thin' - would you rather I bought a pony so that my legs dangle with roller skates on so that I don't 'blow off'!!!?!!

P.S. I love cobs - they are usually honest and hardworking with a character to die for but I won't discriminate the person riding them just because they are overweight or underweight - a horse will only look as good as it's rider.

Sophie, tongue-in-cheek hun, tongue-in-cheek :D:D

I have given the matter due and weighted consideration, and have decided that, in the interests of good horsemanship and fair play to all, I shall donate some of my excess blubber to all these poor skinny wee things.

Please, no thanks are needed, I feel it is not only my duty, but indeed, is a privilege :)

Its very true. I had to sell my horse because I was too light and kept getting blown off in a high wind. My YO got used to getting the step ladder out to help me get down from whichever tree I had ended up in that time. Jumping is a high risk sport as well as with the different wind angles there is a high chance you'll just part from the horse and go soaring away in the form of some kind of light aircraft.

Stop this madness at once!!

Oh golly sorry!!!!!!! After I read some of the replies I realised too late!! Massive apologies. Maybe I'm feeling irate because it's the school holiday's and I have my 4 yr old daughter on my lap, my baby is asleep and my oldest son is in London with his Granny for the day and my gorgeous horses are getting fat in the field because I can't ride them (well at least one of us is getting fat!!).

You do realise that people at work are starting to stare?

I am sat laughing out loud at the computer screen instead of working.

Mrs M I have to say I will gladly donate some of my wobbly bits too however I drawn the line at my boobs as my hubby loves these and also I do believe they are natures air bags!
:) :) :)

Where's Starbucks when you need her:D

Skinnies wearing the huge 'just shot out of cannon look' jockey skull caps, makes me chuckle every time.

My mum once bought me a Charles and Owen ventura JS cap for Christmas, never laughed at myself so much, I looked like a power ranger!

Lol :D

You have an excuse hun, or in your case, three excuses :D :D :D. I'm convinced that children addle the brain :D

Have a hot choccy :D

It would be a good idea to limit them to a 12 hand maximum and then their ankles can be tied together under the poinies stomach. It totally eliminates getting blown off the pony in the wind!

Sophie - I can't believe that with you have not joined your horse in getting fat! Some People! Honestly I think the only thing you can do to correct the situation is eat Mars bars. ;)

Haha, talking of hats that make you look stupid (and I have a really small head anyway), I'm the one on the right:

Ha ha - laughed all the way down this thread!! :D

Perhaps the Insurance Companies should step in here and refuse to insure riders under a certain weight who ride horses over a certain size...

PS - I am 6ft tall and weight 10 stone (in my dreams). Do you think I am too light to ride my 16.3hh sports horse?
