I posted on sunday about my mare having coliced in the morning and about a swelling around her chest and not breathing properly. My vet was baffled by it.

Well we sent her down to Edinburgh to the hospital so they could check her out and i've had awful news back :( The swelling on her chest is not an allergic reaction but is possibly because of a tumor. They did a smear test from the fluid they extracted and found abnormal cells but will need to confirm it tomorrow with more tests. They said the tumor may have been caused by pneumonia which can be caught while travelling. A month ago she was sent to Newmarket hospital from Warwick to have her back checked out and it was when she came back that the swelling developed.

If it is a tumor it is in an inoperable position. I really cant believe it. She is only 9years old. So upset :(

*hugs*

Really sorry to hear that, Jo Jo - read your post on Sunday. Fingers crossed it's not what they think....

Thats such bad luck, Im so sorry, will be crossing fingers its better than it sounds. How awful to do everything to make it better and then have it get worse. hope for the best....

I'm so sorry its looking so bad for her :( But I'm the eternal optimist so will be keeping my fingers crossed.

((hugs)) and <<<positive vibes>>> on the way for both of you

I wasn't expecting that! I thought she had swelling before she travelled (as well as after)? I know they must be sure of their facts but I'll just keep hoping for them to have made a really way out mis-diagnosis. Sending you hugs x

omg terrible terrible - but - a sothers have said im also an optimist - we will all send you the best good luck vibes im sure - think positive - i really really hope i see a more positive post from you soon xxxx

Well she went to Newmarket a month ago and spent about 5 days there then came home. A couple weeks after that the swelling blew up around her chest. Then it was another week and a half before I transported her up to Aberdeenshire but she had been given 3 injections of steroids over that time which got the swelling down and she was given the ok to travel. So my guess is it all started from the trip to Newmarket and she just got more and more fluid around her chest.

Thanks for all your good vibes. I really hope they have it wrong but most of all I want her to be out of pain and discomfort. Shes given me just over 2 wonderful years and has been the best first horse. I dont think i'll ever find such a sweet affectionate horse. :(

Really Sorry to hear about your mare, I read your post over the weekend and was wondering how you were getting on.
Fingers crossed for you both xx

I have had the same news for my ID gelding earlier this year!!!!

I was told that although the tumour is in his chest and is in an unoperable place, if the tumour is benign he may live another 13 years (he is 13 now).

I know its awful news and i was in tears for days but have they said if the tumour is malignant or benign????

I can only keep my fingers crossed for my boy that he keeps going strong. The swelling has gone down n ow but i am sure in the winter when he is not moving so much it will all reappear!

Huge hugs and lots of luck, i hope it comes good for you XXX

They didnt say whether it was benign or not. I'm guessing they will say more tomorrow when they have tested the cells further. I just got the feeling that he was hinting there would only be one choice if it is a tumor.

I'll let you all know what the vet says tomorrow.

Cross fingers and everything else it's benign x
