Instead of going out for a ride I am at the computer! Can't decide whether to ride or not.
a) horse hasn't been ridden for a couple of days and spent a good part in the stable yesterday;
b) the only time he gets upset is in a wind;
c) I don't want a branch on my head.

Keep hoping that it will die down a bit.

Nope, not worth it.
I don't fancy a tree on the head, and with the noise of the wind it means I'm alot less aware of traffic sounds.

i do if needed - but keep away from woods etc.

tbh thought if its high enough winds to stop me trailering then i'd not - as then i'd not compete in that weather also - but if its just windy then i do as she needs to learn to go well in all weathers

i must admit she prob could do with being ridden today but unless the rain slows a bit theres not a hope in hells chance :o
if not though then i MUST ride tomorrow as she cant go out SJ on sunday with only being ridden on the tues!

Hmmm.... I too would be afraid of falling trees, flying sheep and ponies, blisters, chapped lips, watery eyes, snot (I hate wind-snot) and various other wind related anomalies.

no - I'll ride in most weathers, even snow (we can just ride on the farm and pony is barefoot)

but the weather today is proper scary, howling winds. Plus its recycling day in the village and I do not wish to meet my death being hit by a flying recycling green box which will no doubt be flying all over the village :o

I can't - very high winds and sqwualy rain too - just not going to get anything worth having out of him as he won't be remotely focused. I'm really not a fair weather rider and it gets me down - you know, trying to maintain a programme and no indoor facilities and DREADING that this is a sign of things to come!!! Oh for an indoor!!

I did this morning, only because she needed some exercise and it would have been fourth day of not being ridden otherwise. Plus it wasn't raining!!
She was actually relatively sensible, but only did half hour if walk and trot work, just to take the edge off of her.

I had to cancel my lesson twice this week due to bad weather on tues and major flooding yesterday :( so no lesson this week for me and I don't intend to ride today either as a, field is too wet now and b, it's blowing a hooley :( I have a comp on sat and haven't exercised her since sunday :o

I wouldn't mind pootling around our own field in this as none of ours mind wind. Wouldn't go near any structures or trees though.

I wouldn't take out of our fields though and definitely not on a road.

Was following (about 2 bus lengths back) two horses exercising hounds this morning. One horse walked most of it on two legs - not what I would be doing.

Few weeks back in this I was waved past a horse on a blind bend who didn't have 4 legs on the ground at any point and was at flat out uncontrolled trot with dog a bus length infront in the middle of the road.
I sat well behind until horse was off the road.

When I first got my horsey I would never do anything with him when it was windy as it sent him crackers...and as a ex racer I didnt want to push my luck and he was so well behaved the rest of the time, Im a big believer in knowing when to pick your battles. We have 'known' each other 3 years now so have a better understanding of each other and we do ride out if it is windy but not if it is howling...today it is most def howling!

I tend to ride indoor if very windy as my Mare gets a bit spooky with stuff blowing around the place. Was only talking to a friend who is polish the other day about this & in Poland NO ONE Rides in the wind! reckon if we were the same we would only be able to ride 6mths of the year, if that:D

Oh! I feel brave (or stupid) now!

I didn't realised how windy it was until I was tacking up and I didn't want to back down and start getting wimpy with his training.
He was a bit 'fresh' and we jogged a bit of the way, but over all he was fantastic!!

I ride in the wind unless it is really severe. I like my horse to be happy to go out in anything.

If there is a risk of being hit by debris then I would go in the indoor. If there was a risk of the roof of the indoor being lifted off then I'd give it a miss I guess!

I can barely walk against the wind so no way I am riding in it! Agree they should be able to cope in all weathers but that isn't just high winds out there it's a full on gale so it would be stupid and dangerous!

Hmmm, wind is absolutely howling around our barn-conversion office at the moment. I ride when it is a bit windy (and if you go up onto the hills it can be windy on a 'normal' day) but I don't think I would ride in this! I don't think horsey would want to go out either! If I had the option to go to a school without hacking I would insted, If I could use an indoor on a windy (or wet) day - even better!

I just went out without thinking. Was leading one, too! It was pretty blustery, but both are good kids and as long as they get the odd 'picnic', they don't care. They even passed the swinging pub sign and waving flags without batting an eyelid between them! I wouldn't say it was gale force, here, though.

With or without their riders?:p

:D with today.

Ironically same place had a 'hunt' down several months back... Was terrifying to watch. Several careered around the first blind bend on our road at gallop, on both sides of the road (several horses wide) I wouldn't take my car faster than a walk for the potholes (several foot wide and half a foot deep (very country!)). Some trotting in gallop position and others teetering around.
Within 5minutes about 25 of the 30 or so riders came back, most leading horses or loose. Regularly have tacked up horses trotting past our window.

I do feel sorry for the groom who is fantastic though both on the ground and on the horses, don't envy what she has to deal with there at all!

I make a point of occasionally riding when it's windy so that they get used to going in all weathers, but obviously not in a full blown gale. The horses don't like going out when the weather's rotten any more than I do, but it can't be an excuse for bad behaviour. Much rather be in front of the fire with a cocoa, 'tho. (That's me, not the horses!)

Probably not.

Tried with Newbie on Tuesday and really regretted it. Had to get up and ride before work day after and have never done that in my life. Decided from now on in vile weather will only ride my gelding if at all. OH says that I've let new horse win if I do this but I say 'pick your battles'

Would be far more likely to ride either in daylight though. My floodlights are so high that they sway in high winds and its not only the horses this spooks!

I've just been for a quick hour ride and although its very windy, its not too bad here. Ben's no different than normal, doesn't bother at all with anything, he's just slightly more forward going ( only slightly mind! ) I had a lovely time :) Wouldn't have gone if it was raining too
