Very windy - ride or not?

I rode this morning, it was very windy up in the hills anyway, we had a little canter where the ground is well drained and not boggy and I felt like I might get swept off my horse but it wasn't so bad that I feared for tree branches and random stuff blowing around. I wouldn't like to go out in that, nor in driving rain, seems little point in it, but then I am lucky the horses get daily turnout so if they don't get ridden it's not as critical as it would be for a stabled horse (I guess)

I must be mad or stupid. We go out in all weather, wind, rain, hail. My horse is a horse. Shes wont melt in the rain and im pretty sure all 500kg wont blow away in a gail. I suppose all horses are different, but mine knows the drill, if were going out ... then were going out! :D

Depends. Not if I think it likely I'll get hit by something blowing around. And also depends on horse. Plastic bags hurtling around ours aren't bothered by, but I wouldn't take out something that would take major issue with them out. A plastic bag flew out of nowhere once & wrapped itself halfway across my ponys face while we were cantering. Being very sane & steady, she did an emergency halt, bag fell off, blew round her legs, she had a very small snort, realised it was just a bag & carried on as normal. However that could have had a very different outcome on lots of horses, so that would very much affect my decision.

Well if your weather is like mine i would think you were mad to ride in it, the wind is howling & i can hear it over the top the TV, the rain is the size of marbles & hurts when it hits you. I had to leave my chickens in as they were getting blown away earlier!

Ergh mine hasn't been properly ridden since Sunday, with the exception of loose schooling on Tuesday to give him some exercise. He really did burn off some steam and enjoyed a few bucks and a roll and just generally playing.
I can hear the wind howling wherever I am in the house, it's really bad.
Thinking of loose schooling again. Or just bonding and playing really so I can put him to bed sleepy.
I hate this weather though, yesterday I wanted to ride but was completely sodden from just bringing two in, let alone schooling for 20-30 mins in an outdoor arena.
As for hacking out, no thank you!

I cancelled my first lesson with our new horse at instructors advice... been happy hacking her on loose rein for last few weeks as she needed teeth done so a bit disappointed as was excited to get going with schooling but no point starting on a bad note with a young horse... wind is horrible

Old Charles is not a big fan of hedgerow or shrubbery at the best of times. Dread to think what he'd do if wind was added to the mix :eek:
I'm really wary of windy conditions after i had a lesson on a really windy day a while back and went from steady walk to very long ditch leap because some shrubbery moved!
However courtesy of the rain we now have several hundred meters of flooded road to ride on. Begged off today because it's too windy here. Shame as it's great fun but I don't think it'll be draining away anytime soon.

Im not this week no, Apart from the fact my horse coliced last weekend so he's having an easy week its just TOO windy.
Last time I took him out in weather like this he was perfect til a bin bag literally crashed into his face and terrified him. This really made me think even knowing he's good and avoiding as many dangers as possible you cant avoid them all and we nearly took a car out in his fear and sudden blindness.

I just jumped my 6 year old, though that was in an indoor school.

Then I went up to my other yard and backed the Daemon in the field. He wasn't remotely bothered by the wind :D

No trees or traffic to pose a threat in there though ;)

It doesn't bother me (or my boy) but I do stay away from wooded areas if it's gale force and we're stabled on a private estate with very little traffic & wide grass verges! :)

Everyone rode as usual this morning at my yard. I hacked one and schooled the other. They are both fine in all weather, we had more problems during the summer due to a couple of weeks when every fly and midge in the UK descended on us.

We did have to ride under a half-hanging off branch suspended over a single track lane but I felt safer riding a horse under it than driving my car. At least the horse would have quicker reactions than me.

I rode out early this morning just as it was getting light. Wasn't too windy then but it's picked up now :( My girl isn't too bad in wind - as long as she has some company. Next dilemma - how to bring them in safely tonight when it's dark, windy and probably hissing it down. Can't wait...

It's disgusting out there now - thank god I left Shy in, he's the worst native EVER - he hates wind and rain :o When will this weather break, urgh ???

Me too. Searching for a black horse in 20 acres on a dark, stormy night is not fun.
Don't know about you, but mine always wee bucket loads on nights like this. Stables are usually rank by morning.

I rode both of mine quickly today. We are on small quiet lanes and bridleways, so the traffic is not an issue. It did feel a bit Wizzard of Oz. There were a couple of random things flew past, and someone's wheelie bin flapping about on its side, but they're fine. I think it does them good to some extent, as long as there is no danger. Ice and fog are my big no nos - we are on very hilly lanes..

Our hens weren't impressed at all. They came out for about ten mins, then all went back in!

With heavy rain and high winds, we couldn't hack any out today, which would have meant a LOT of pressure on our one and only outdoor manege if the newly backed all had to be ridden by the senior rider (who is the only one so far to have ridden a couple of them) So we shoved the girls on the newly backed ones, and he gave them a lesson - four done in the time it would have taken him to do 1! They were amazingly good!

I braved it, and he was great.
Despite beforehand someone appearing around the corner with a wheelbarrow, to which he tried to jump into my arms, but landed on my foot instead..!:D

I went out yesterday afternoon. He wasnt bothered at all, and was actually really good. We didnt have any rain though, and with the wind, the ground is starting to dry out in places which was nice. I wouldnt have bothered if it was raining too.

I ride in the wind unless it is really severe. I like my horse to be happy to go out in anything.

If there is a risk of being hit by debris then I would go in the indoor. If there was a risk of the roof of the indoor being lifted off then I'd give it a miss I guess!

Same (I don't have an indoor tho!). Trailered to my lesson as usual last night, the wind had dropped but the weather was still horrible. Horse wasn't enamoured but after five minutes she was fine. She lives out so at least she got respite standing in the trailer the and back :o
