Just went out to catch my little chestnut as he managed to jump of out his starvation paddock [yet again].
Noticed big chestnut was a little slow and droopy, so went to give him carrot. Noticed some 'mud' between his front legs, but when i looked at him realised he was clean, so couldn't be.
Found this [vet is on the way.] Any ideas? Very worried mummy here. Must've been between half 7 last night and 9 am this morning.

I'm v concerned about about of blood, and the swelling. Is still leaking a thin bloody liquid.

I would get a vet to look at that. It looks like a nasty puncture wound and they are the worst. Also it is in a difficult place so think the vet ought to have a look.

Vet is on the way, but just thought I'd show you guys...and get a little support! It's not really a puncture, the pics were awkward to take so you can't really tell. It's an almost surgically neat 3 cm cut [not superficial, but not a gash either].

Looks like hes got hooked up on something. Im sure the vet will sort it out. Always best to get the vet out sooner rather than later.
Let us know what happens.
Healing vibes coming your way.

Try not to worry, these things always look dreadful when there is swelling but if its still oozing blood thats sometimes a good thing as it helps to flush out any dirt or infection that may be trying to get into the wound.

Once its cleaned up and the swelling starts to go down it wont look half as frightening.

Just had vet come

He kept pressing the swelling and it was squirting. Thinks he may have tried to walk over something and a bit of wood staked him [apologies to stilton - you said puncture!]. Will probably swell up more, vet doubts there is anything in it. 5 day course of Norodine, and 5 days bute then review, and fade the bute out gradually. 1 wk to 10 days no riding and minimal turnout, and then slow work building it up. Can lead him out in hand though so the leg doesn't swell, and cold hose.
Means I'm probably out of area eventing on 19th july

vet said I might, but it's better to say no than get our hopes up.

Hope he mends very soon. If I were you I'd forget 19th July as it looks very close to the girth area, so he might not be too keen that until its really healed

God laura; im so sorry chicken. Got your text but no credit, sorry I didn't reply! Was going to stick a fiver on just for you but you cant put a fiver on on 02

:( Hope he gets better soon, speak to you later xx

Hose it as much as you can, if you can find a way to tie the hose so it dribbles on it continuously it will heal really quickly, and I wouldn't write off the area eventing yet.
Good luck.
