I have a jack Russell that had chronic bronchitis as a pup (if u had seen the conditions he was kept in by a so called working terrier home it's lucky that's was all he had!!) for the last 3 ish years (he is 8yo) he started suffering from these attacks where he sucks in air through his mouth sharply and blows it out again really quickly, almost like he's choking but he isn't. He'll do it for about 10-15secs stop, swallow a few times and then anything from a few seconds to a number of minutes later he will have another attack. This will happen quite a few times and then stop. He then doesn't seem to have an attack for days then suddenly another one. Nothing seems to trigger it, he's worse in summer than winter. Took him to my vet who said it was to do with the bronchitis and gave him broncho dilators corvental d 100mg to have one tablet each day. He did the choke test and the dog reacted by choking immediately (apparently by doing the test there should be no reaction). Vet said there's not enough oxygen getting into his lungs. He has in his life passed out a few times. Once he completely stopped breathing and turned blue after running around a dusty yard, had one of his attacks and stopped breathing. The second time he passed out was in the vets he had a choke chain on because he had out grown his harness, pulled all the way into the vets and passed out in the waiting room.

Firstly does what my vet said sound right or is there something else? He had x rays on his heart and chest, heart was fine but the lungs weren't I can't remember exactly what he said but there was evidence if bronchitis and the airways weren't very wide. The corvental d worked but at £1.30 something per day VERY expensive!! I wouldn't begrudge him a penny but I really can't afford it for the next couple of years. Is there an alternative that I can use that's cheaper and can be bought without prescription? I've been on vet meds and corvental is about 50p a day which is more my price range but u need a prescription and I think my vet may think im taking the p*** if I ask him to give me a prescription! He said the tablets are no stronger than caffeine so there must be some alternative??

Thank u!!

I certainly can't tell you if what your vet says is right or wrong , he is the expert, but you shouldn't worry about asking for a prescription. You will probably have to pay for it (my vets charge £8) but if you get a decent amount per prescription it should be worth it, e.g. the prescription I get for my ponies Pergolide is for 100 tablets and it is a repeat x 3 prescription which last her around 9 months.

thank u, we have known him for years and im sure what hes saying is right, i just dont want to offend him by asking for a prescription! he is the horses vet aswell!!

i was just thinking is there a homeopathic remedy he could have instead. the corvental is just a stimulant to widen the airways, menthol etc does the same thing i was hoping perhaps i could use that instead.

I agree with MM, your vet knows the dogs history. It sounds like your dog had irrepairable damage to his airways and will need medication for life. Do not stop his treatment without serious consideration and chuck that choke chain in the bin! :)

chain is long gone! hate them, but he had out grown his harness so was a last resort. never normally have to put the dogs on a lead they never really go anywhere that requires a lead and as they are terriers u can just scoop them up one under each arm lol.
