My 300kg pony has suffered a laceration to the medial distal radius above the knee. She had an initial anti bacterial injection. I have been charged £47.59 for 10 times 50g sachets of Trimediazine Plain ie a total of 500g.(10 days )dose.
The internet price is £28.88

Dose as recc on the package is 30mg per kg body weight for 5 days.I make that 45g per day for 5 days = 225g. Can someone please advise why I have been charged more more than double the dose and nearly £20 more for the product?

I would also be grateful for an indication of typical horse vet prescription charges.

Well obviously you are best asking your vet about this as you clearly feel as though you've been ripped off. For what it's worth, TMPS is routinely given twice daily at the licenced dose rate as it is more effective than a single daily dose. Also, it is quite common practice to round the dose up the the next whole sachet for ease of administration. The majority of my clients would be more irritated if I told them to take 5g of powder out of each sachet than sold them one extra.

Prescription charges tend to range from about £7-£20 in my experience. Unfortunately online pharmacies seem to be able to sell drugs cheaper than vet practices can buy them in, but in emergency situations waiting a couple of days for medication to arrive in the post may not be the most prudent approach.

I can't comment on that particular drug but a friend of mine advised asking them for a private prescription of the drug you need (especially if its a regular purchase) and they tend to negotiate with you to avoid you buying online.

Have to admit I don't do it as I'm amazingly grateful to my vet for all the attention (beyond the call of duty :D) over the last few years with my pony. I'm happy to support my local vets as I definitely need them more than they need me :D
