If I buy just one book on the subject which one do you think I should buy? I've got the Complete Equine Veterinary Manual which is a great starting point but I now want a bit more depth and information.

I want (need) an easy index, pictures and lots of detail!!

What is well thumbed and dog-eared in your tack room?

Thanks

I know its slightly more specialised. Your Horse's Health: Lameness by Oliver Davis is brilliant for lameness issues!!

I actually find the internet much better to find things out that one book.

Equine veterinary notes for horse owners is really handy and useful if you want to read up on something.

Agree with K27. Here's a link to the hardback version which isn't much more than the paperback and has to be worth it for a reference book:

I got mine from an equine car boot sale for £1

This book is fab for feet/leg issues and is a great starting point.

I've got more books than I know what to do with but I refer back to this one a lot.

I also have the book suggested by K27 (sorry, hope I have the name right). This is heavier going but very useful.

As a quick reference book I like this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/Your-Horses-Heal...5422&sr=1-9 Special offer if you buy it with the lameness book

I know what you mean AmyMay, it's my "joey" book that needs to be kept in the freezer along side this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/Practical-Guide-...555&sr=1-11

The book we have found most useful over the years has been a veterinary text book written by Derek Knottenbelt of Liverpool University, although it doesn't have treatments it's got lots of pics and shows things like a red bag delivery in a foaling mare which enable you to decide whether it's urgent or can wait a day.
There are lots of gruesome pics too, but even though it was £60 I'd happily pay that again.

LOL my mum bought me this when I got my first horse and it scared me cos it seemed like everything was a death sentence, I was left wondering how I was ever going to keep him alive.

Vet notes for the horse owner ... helpful but also really scary. I tend to look things up in the book first, then read up further on the internet.

I am the proud owner of 9 large volumes of 'The Horse, its Treatment in Health & Disease' by Prof. Wortley-Axe. They belonged to my grandfather and were published at the end of the 1800's or early 1900's.

I know that is absolutely no use whatsover, but they are wonderful books with fabulous colour plates and well worth a read...even today!
