Had the vet to my mare as she was unable to be shod yesterday as far too stiff.

Vet said she had the start of arthritis in her hocks and front knee .

She advised giving mare Danilon a week before shoeing and should it get worse then put her on it daily. They will have to check her every 4 months due to new regulations with the drug. She suggested magnets as bioflow were doing a 90 day free trail. Has anybody had any good results with magnets ?

Ive had a lot of success with magnetic therapy and yet wouldn't recommend bioflow to be honest.

Is the horse in question living in or out? I use Aerborn magnetic products and they've been fabulous. Mine has the leg wraps on whenever in the box.

The reason im not keen on Bioflow is that they use a brushing boot design which has a tendency of making the legs sweaty and then rubbing. Aerborn (and no doubt some others) use a leg wrap design instead which is more suitable for overnight use (although obviously, if the horse is out, this is a problem).

These do both hock and knee boots also.

I love my bioflow boots and their the vented design so do not over heat the legs and can be used when the horse is in or out.

There's also some strap type magnets often raved about on here. They're just like a little band that you strap around the horses leg and can be left on 24/7.

Have them in front of me, and leaflet says....
"Above the fetlock is best for everyday and overall benefit but can be used above the knee or around the hock if these areas are closer to the injury"

I wear a bioflow magnet on my wrist, and it eases my back and knee pain, so I do believe that the effect is on the whole body rather than just the locality.

ETS: You can buy magnetic hock and knee wraps on eBay I'm sure....

Is she on a good joint supplement? you could always ask ypur vet whether Adequan or Cortisone would be a good idea?. The Danilon is a good bute though- its the only one one of my horses will eat!. I'd be interested to find out more about the magnetic boots as well- good luck though and I hope that you find something that helps.

She is on cider vinigar, cod liver oil and extra flex. I was thinking of trying cortisone, I did mention this to vet but she try the magnetic boots. Thank you everyone for your comments.

I have used the magnetic straps on Cairo for 2 years now and they certainly do something for him. He only has had them off when having cancer treatment - he wears them on front below the fetlock as he has low ringbone. In his case you don't know they are there as they are covered by feather.

I did have longer straps made and did wear them above the hock, but Chancer managed to keep chewing them off so went to putting them below the hocks.

I have also found feeding cortaflex and instant linseed to be beneficial. The linseed particularly seems to have helped with stiffness.

Hmmm, thats interesting - I wasn't told that, and I'm not paying for the vet to come out every 4 months!! I just go to the surgey and pick up a box when I need one

. I keep looking at magnets, but don't like the idea of him wearing boots all the time

Bioflow dont do it for me (or my horse) but I can fully recommend magnetic.co.uk Hubby borrowed my horses fetlcok band when he tore his shoulder and swore that it was that that caused such rapid healing....
