Vet charges, what do you pay

I've just received the bill for my girl, she jumped the fence to the field of lush grass week and gave herself colic, called the vet straight away, in office hours. I have just changed vets as the one i had for years has retired from horses.

This is the breakdown of the bill,
1 Equine visit - £31.04
1 Equine Exam - 30.07
1 Equine inttavenous - £6.42
30 buscopan co inj £15.63
6 equipalazone inj - £4.14

I know the call out was around this althoughthey are only 4 miles away, my old vet travelled 11 miles and theres was £26.
But i thought the examination would be less, so it has just sparked an interest in what other people pay is this about right?

That is very similar to what my vets charge, basically, I suppose each time they come out it is £60, just to turn up.

I pay £30 for callout, not sure about exam of horse as never had to have her looked at *touches lots of wood!* (but I get that 1/2 price as I work there anyway). I think £30 is about right and I know that when I have taken my hamster in to the small animal vet it was £17 to examine that!!

The vet I used to use charged £40 before he even got out of the car! This included routine visits when he's coming to do jabs etc.

I once had to call him out on a Sunday because the youngster had managed to kick himself and cut his leg (it needed stitching) and I was charged £70 for the call out plus another £40 odd for the actual stitching.

I've subsequently changed vets and they charge £25 for turning up during normal hours and £45 for out of hours which is much better.

Better still, they are happy to write me a prescription for Danilon for my loan mare (she gets one a day due to spavins and I buy it off tinternet) and don't charge me for this.

I pay about the same for callout and exam (can't say exactly as we're further from the vets now and not called them out yet) he travelled approx 40 miles for that.

Can't comment on drugs as never had a colic callout so no idea

Ive not had the vet out to my horse yet, but just booked him in for his booseter injection and it will be £29 (that includes callout and VAT). They are about 5 miles away.

I've just got a bill for £41.02. That's £23.72 for call out, £17.30 for lameness exam. Vets are about 20 miles away.

It does include vat. Perhaps it is about right. But they are good prices you have got vicm2509 and threeponies.

i pay nothing lol - i love being a vet!

i was paying £53 call-out and £25 for an exam at my last yard when I was still a student and needed a vet. Vets did come 20 miles though - didn't like any of my closer ones, although even the one 2miles up the road charged £35 callout.

exam fee should be around £20-25 i reckon as that's what i charge for a small animal consult and horse vet is effectively doing the same thing. I have been charged £20 just for a bit of a chat, without a real exam before.

exam is around £30 unless its a breif exam then its £15 or for lamness its £41.80 for full exam or around £18 for breif. as much as poss always try and get booked in on routine day for things!

My vets charge £50 for callout, which isn't too bad as they are approx 30 miles away and never charge extra out of hours or b/holidays

We pay about £70 just for callout (our vet travels a long way, but he's a damn good vet). Last year we didn't pay for the actualy jabs though coz one of our friends flirted a LOT with our vet!

Bloody hell! I couldnt afford to keep a horse in the UK. Ali came yesterday to do the flu/tet jabs. No call out fee asked at all. I paid 15 euro each for my 3 for the jabs and the liveries paid 35 euro.I paid my wormers (which I can only get through a vet) which was Panacur, 12.60 euros each and I get to charge the full price for the liveries which is 19.50 euros. Do you reckon hes got a soft spot for me? I think its because I can make a damn good cup of tea!!! Mairi.

Ps, if he come out for one of mine the visit is 50 euro and the cost of the medicines, if its a livery its 80 euro plus meds.

Thanks for all the replies, it quite interesting really how some of them do vary. Really should have got my head down and been a vet that would've solved lots of problems!
