Vet Client Evenings

Do your vets ever invite you to a client evening? Ours have client evenings every few months where they lecture on various topics. This time it will be about Care of, Injuries to & Feeding the Sports Horse. This is provided free of charge in a school lecture theatre in the evening, coffee etc provided at the end. The vets lecture themselves & also have visiting speakers who are acknowledged experts on certain aspects of treatment.

I know all those who go from our yard appreciate & look forward to these talks. Do your vets do anything like this for you?

No my vet comes to Vet evenings - this generally is a home-made chicken Dhansak at my house, with a number of glasses of wine and a good old chat about everything that is going on in the world.

I'm sure this might be something to do with why my vet bills are so much lower than everyone elses.

Yes! Went to one last week actually with work about diagnosing equine lameness, was really really good the vets were excellent speakers! Also, my vets (different from work vets) do a lot too which are really good. We also get a lot of free clinics with the vet nurses for cats and dogs etc to get health checks, wormers etc. Makes paying the vets bills a little easier when they come round!

LMAO!! Yep just the curry...and being long-term friends.

Going back to Tobys post though - I think they are a great idea particularly for people who appear to be dumb-struck when their vets come to visit their horses. I'm sure it must familiarise them somewhat with their vet.

Value my vets expertise, but they are a country vets and I don't know how much time they would have to put on events like this; they are intitled to their weekends off as well. However, I do just have to give them a ring and they will give me everything I need to know in layman's terms FOC so don't abuse that privilege. If I need guidance or second opinion I am not too blinkered too seek guidance; so it is good that others can offer that expertise including this site and a lot of you folks!! Been there and done that - so don't discount yourselves; you're hands on a lot of the time; and your advice is invaluable also FOC. Keep it up.

!!!I agree entirely,we dont have that round here but am sure if they did it would be HUGELY popular!!I am sure to if it was on a donation basis it would still be as huge!!!!x
 
They've done evenings on different types of wounds, how to treat & which type of wounds & where located that constitute an emergency & they need to attend. Laminitis, lameness, colic etc. Loads of different subjects & they are open to suggestions from clients for future talks. They really believe that educating the horse owner regarding medical matters will pay dividends.

Yes Oakham veterinary hospital Rutland do some brilliant ones also for the small animal practice too all free always followed by a finger buffet thing and tour around the hospital. It is a top practice!
 
Yes, my vets do these. They've done ones on lameness, lami, nutrition, pregnancy and foal care, colic, wound care, dentistry and various other topics. I've been to a few and they have been excellent. The tone is aimed at the "knowledgeable horseowner", so its neither overly simplistic or too technical. A brilliant idea and a fantastic way to for the clinic to help the wider horse owning community.
 
My vet's don't do these, but there are various charities and regional horsey groups that do. They are a fab idea, both to raise awareness and knowledge and meet other local horsey people.
