Hello I was wondering if anyone could offer any advise on vets fees only insurance as in reality that is the only cover I actually need/want. Rupert has a reasonable vet history and his insurance was too expensive to justify on a normal policy but as I am thinking about competing a bit more seriously I would feel reassured by some insurance!
I already have my bhs gold membership so have public liability etc.
Any help would be appreciated :)

The way to do it is opt for a low value for the horse and keep the vet cover, that will keep your premium down.

As my horse aged and ceased competing I insured him for the lowest price on his value (1k) and maintained the full vet cover.

Obviously this won't work if your horse is high value, but bear in mind if the horse was fatally injured or sick the insurance company will only pay out what they consider the horse is worth in the current market anyway.

I see well I paid £5500 for him and I doubt he's worth half that now but when I put a lower price on him it says you must put minimum of 1/2 the sale price. I'm not bothered about them paying out for death or anything else really it is just to cover vets fees should he need anything costly or ongoing. So far he would only be insured on 3 legs (I believe), he has had colic surgery and he also has some wind problem, pharyngeal collapse I think it is called so regular insurance was just too costly. I'm just investigating other options as he is doing so much better/more than I anticipated this time last year.
Thanks for your input :)

I'd work out what the premiums would be for him and then put that amount away in a separate account each month. If you want to be really cautious then put in the amount you've saved whilst he hasn't been insured as well. Then if something goes wrong you should have a sum available and can make your own choices, rather than finding that actually the insurance doesn't actually cover what you thought it did.

There is a user on here with a few horses who has been doing that and her horses have had such a decent amount in their account after several years that they have bought their own trailer with the surplus and also lent a considerable sum to the cats for operations. I can't remember the username, though.

I would get a credit card just for vet use and nothing else. Then you can decide what you want to pay for not the insurance company saying he is not covered for that.

Right they are great ideas, I think for now I might go down the credit card route you know, having just finished uni and in my first full time job funds are pretty tight, when I'm back on my feet I think I will put aside money each month for him.
Thanks for your input that's really helpful! Horse insurance is so complicated!!

I took out insurance with nfu about 18 months ago. The documentation showed the breakdown of the premium, the majority of it was for the vet's cover so don't think dropping other cover will reduce premium much. Having said that I have bhs gold membership and opted not to buy public liability insurance from nfu, think several companies allow this.
