I've just had the bill for castrating yearling colts. One was a rig , so I knew the cost would be more than normal. I am interestad to hear opinions on the breakdown of the bill for this colt.A charge of £186.72 for a general anaesthetic plus £238.20 for the vet's time(ie 30 minutes at £7.94 per minute) This was itemised!.Other drugs extra. The colt in question is a Welsh B --not very big.Comments please.

If this horse had a GA, then it was not just your vets time, it was at least one other member of staff monitoring that end of business. I think that is a very reasonable charge to knock a pony out and perform surgery. It wasn't just a simple castration after all.

I paid £180 to have a standing castration done on a small pony and that was 7 years ago !

I paid £500 for a rig opp just over a year ago. This included hospitalisation, drugs and VAT. Believe me that is reasonable, another practice quoted well over £1000. I was told the price up front and they stuck to it, no idea how long it took though. My pony was about 14 hands, I would think the only variable is the quantity of anaesthetic they give.
