Hi all,

Very cheeky indeed i know but....about a year ago I had a vet come out to tend to my horse. The vet i called was unavailable so his colleague came out. A year on i still have no bill. If the vet wanted to contact me he could as the original vet is a regular vet at my yard. I do feel guilty however i have lots of money going out just now and I dont really want to remind them about money i am owe them if they really have forgotten?! what would u do?

The ball is in their court really, they should have had all the information from a) your call requesting the vet and b) the vet's time and c) medications log to enable them to bill you accurately and on time. I would put a sum away towards it so if they ever do chase for it you can pay swiftly without a crisis but I wouldn't go chasing them for a bill.

Honesty is the best policy! You never know when u need them! Mum always told me the two most important people you pay is vet and the farrier.

Let me see.... Would I remind them..... Like hell I would :)
I wasn't charged when my mare was pts, no way was I chasing them.

I agree with D O'D, I would try to make sure I had something put away to cover it just in case but certainly wouldn't mention it to them. I suppose if you get past April and don't hear anything then it is unlikely you ever will, once year end paperwork is all tied up.

I'll agree with your mum and I'm sure she'd pay up pronto once she received the bill, but in cases where no bill has been issued she might not feel so strongly!

I once thought this about a vet visit. I received no bill through to door. I rung them up and it was still on their system with interest growing, they'd just forgotten to send the bill to me!
Maybe ring the practice and ask if you have any outstanding payments without mentioning the specific visit.

I would either not say anything but have the money to one side in case they one day ask for it.
If they do their books at their year end it may come up in their system somewhere.

Or call them and ask if there is any money owing?

Maybe they have sent a bill but it's got lost in the post. You don't want to run the risk of them not coming out due to an outstanding bill?

My vets have a £350 credit limit so they don't chase until you reach it so maybe they have the same system and you haven't hit the limit yet.

It might be better to en-quire now and work out a payment plan with them than lose sleep over the guilt and worry about a bill dropping on your doormat.

Like you said, if they gave you rubbish service they may have waived the fees???

I just think it's dishonesty and if it does come to light it would look awful that you hadn't paid them. You always know when you have something to pay wether they sent a bill or not. If I was the vet practice I would take some responsibility. There is a certain amount of trust required from the vet, they came out to u and treated you horse. You can't go to sainsburys and pay at the end of the month so IMO vets are good by giving us time to prepare to pay for it. Depends on the person though, that'd just how I roll!

It wasnt my usual vet. I had called them out as it was a sunday and my normal vets are well known for huge callout fees! so i had called another vet who many at my yard use- however he was away to attend a big show so someone was standing in for him. They didnt take any of my details however they do know where my horses is stabled and the vet (who was away attending the show) has been out many times since and never said anything so im not sure if hes even aware of it. Iv never seen the vet who came out to see my horse-not sure if he was maybe not a local vet as nobody at our yard know him!

ps. when did i say he did a shoddy job? the service he provided was fine ;)
also i do have insurance

I'd call them and ask.

A lot of time has elapsed so I can see the temptation to ignore it but I do think what goes around comes around so I would remind them - karma and all that.

If only for the fact that your horse was ill on a Sunday and someone responded to that. My vet has gone the extra mile for me and my horses rely on him, so even if a locum had attended they would come under his wing.
