400mg three times a day. So 1200mg a day?

I am certainly not a vet, but having used it for both pain relief and neurological disease, that seems excessive.

Both of my dogs were about 17kg and on a total of 300mg a day.

Thanks. We thought the same - 1200 mg a day seemed a high dose. Also we have friends whose dogs are on this drug and they were prescribed much lower doses for heavier dogs.

The published dose range for a 23.5kg dog is 235mg- 1175mg, 2-3 times a day so that was on the lower end of the ‘text book’ doses.

I'm sorry but it sounds as if your dog was seriously ill and something drastic had to be done. Your dog was already known to have health issues and then he started 'marching round the house', which sounds like a neurological condition. My best guess as an experienced dog owner is that it wasn't the gabapentin that made him comatose but the neurological condition which progressed until he couldn't wake up.
rara007 is a vet and she says that the dose was not excessive. My advice is to try to concentrate on the many good memories that you have of your dog, who lived to a good age.

I took my JRT to the vets today because she has itchy ears. While I was there I mentioned that I’m not sure if it’s time to give her something for her joints (she already has Yumove). When she gets up from sleeping she’s often a bit stiff, but once she gets going she fine. (she doesn’t like jumping in the car on the way out, but leaps in on the way back. She’s still happy to jump on the sofa and the bed so this could be a red herring) He’s prescribed Gabapentin. After googling I’m really not sure if I want to give her it. I was expecting NSAIDS of some description, not a pain killing drug. She’s 15 but doing amazingly for her age.
Gabapentin is a nerve pain killer, i take it for sciatica and know of friends dogs that have been on it or are on it.. Funnily enough i was at the vets today and overheard someone at the reception desk ask why her dog was on Gabapentin!
