Okay, maybe this should be in the Vet Forum, however, it may be viewed more widely here.

I am currently sorting out my competition kit and every day stuff at the yard. Im pleased to say I dont seem to use much medical/vet supplies but I do like it to be well stocked.
Well whilst going through the box last weekend (mainly due to winston cut) I ended up throwing very old powders and creams away.

The list below is what I have as standard, however why is it when it comes to attending to wounds i feel i dont always have what i really need?

Vet Wrap
Animalintex
Gauze
Cotton Wool
Flush Syringes
Steri pods
Thermometer
Sissors
Medical Tape
Surgical Spirit
Disinfectant
Derma Gel/wet film
Camrosa (just bought)

Do i need anything else?

My lorry also needs kitting out, I have very little bar the top 6 items on the list.

What do you do? do you buy a complete kit from a retailer? or do you just buy essentials (please explain which ones).

My complete first aid kit I bought was useless! I now have most of the things you list, but my latest and most useful addition is some wound wipes (the Red Rum ones), so very handy especially when Maiden has her nosebleeds and I need something better than just a sponge to stick up there! I can't remember what else I have though...

I was thinking more along the lines of salt water for cleaning wounds. Unless that isnt a vet kit item?!

Oh oops forgot I have Hibiscrub.
I like the idea of the instant cold packs.....as i dont think those Equi-n-ice that i use can go over cuts etc.
OMG yes i remember having Iodine Spray, OUCH lol very useful, but horses hate it lol

What eye/drop wash do you suggest?

I guess I should think about getting a good human first aid kit for the lorry too.

I used to work for a vet and they used to put kits together for clients. Which included things like Aluspray and An Antiseptic spray (similar to "purple" spray but that actually had an effect)

A clean bowl and vaseline could be useful too!
 
Durrrrr......

Thats where Im always going wrong, when i do have to clean a wound Im hunting for a clean bowl!!

The Aluspray, is this bought direct from your vet? might be work me speaking to them if it is.
I am always a bit reluctant to buy purple spray (although i have it) as im not really sure it works.
 
I use human antiseptic spray (from Boots) instead of purple spray- it seems to work better and doesn't sting as much.
I also use Saline solution (the stuff for contact lenses) to clean out cuts.

This is turning out more expensive than buying rugs and things lol mind you, be sods law if i dont have it, i might need it.
 
I pack my stuff into large plastic biscuit box and then inside have smaller container ie ice tub, or plastic take away tub. And then label it all up
I'm luck cos work are always throwing out these type of plastic boxes
 
well, maybe i'm just silly, but when I hunted Ludo, I would box there on my own, hunt on my own, drive home on my own, deal wth lorry not starting / no lights / stuck in mud on my own etc... and never ever had anything apart from a towel, sponge and bucket!!!!

luckily it was only ever me that got injured and the stock tie took most of the blood, and i (idiotically) drove lorry home after concussing myself in a bad fall!

Ludo never ever had a scratch on him the whole time - till i was selling him of course !!!

however - Bonnie is a different kettle of 'barking madness', and htis post is v useful to me too.

Yes indeed. When we go hunting I dont think of taking such items. However, does help having my vet out with us most days lol

Also, if its that bad, theres a vet at the events, but its always worth having something to hand.

VODKA IS MORE ESSENTIAL THAN ANYTHING ELSE IMO
 
Well I'm thinking along the vodka lines but I'd go with brandy and also Rescue Remedy - you're bound to be a bit shocked if you've got to deal with anything nasty.

Also mints and chocolate!
 
Clean towel
Plastic bags (to go over poultice or collect up bloodied bandages/ cotton wool)
Liquid paraffin (friend had a horse get a bout of colic at a show)
Cooling leg gel
 
Raid the first aid section in poundstretchers or similar, i got the basics for my first aid kit in there. They have several different versions of instant hot/cold packs, creams, sprays, melolin style dressings and crepe bandages...all for a pound!

My vet box at home is full to the brim of the usual things I use like Animalintex / Vet Wrap etc. Id say it really only has the essentials (although I have millions of different wound sprays / powders etc.), as Im very near a tack shop so can just nip in if I need something specific!

In my competition-box I always have bandages, gamgee, vet wrap, gauze, animalintex, scissors, tape, wound spray/powder/gel, a disinfectant etc. I always have pots of Cut Heal gel which I find brilliant.

Dont have a human first aid kit.... never even thought about it!
