So Lari's leg has swollen again and there's heat over the wound although it looks like he injury site has healed. Top of the leg is filled again. He's back on bute 2 a day on advice of vet yesterday over the phone.

Vet coming out today. Do you think we should scan or xray at this stage?

Obviously I will be guided by the vet tonight but what would your preference be?

He stopped antibiotics last Thursday.

Last photo was Sunday afternoon the others this morning.

Please no unkind comments.

I would x-ray now I think - in case there is something bone related.

Nothing unkind from me. In some ways its harder with the retirees because the line in the sand is so much lower than if they were in work. You want to do your best whilst also knowing months and months of box rest isn't the way forward. I hope its just time and bute he needs xx

X Ray/scan as advised by the vet - you really do need to find out what is going on now.

Hopefully it will respond to treatment.

There is the chance of bone chips etc.

ETA As the owner of two retired wonky horses I would defo want the issue diagnosed, but I do have lines in the sand re what treatment or management I would put them through if it was all going to be very lengthy with extensive box rest.

I'm definitely not going to make any unkind comments as a similar thing happened to my horse (retired due to being a wobbler) about a month ago. Mine the injury is on the inside of a hind leg, got infected, leg swelled and had about 3 weeks box rest with bandage from stifle to hoof. Current bill over £1000 and my vet is also now suggesting an ultrasound as there is still some swelling around the wound, but not affecting the rest of the leg. She thinks there may be underlying damage to soft tissues, but I am unsure whether there would actually be any treatment that could be done whatever the scan shows.

I'm speaking to my vet again on Thurs so I'm really interested to find out how it goes with yours, sorry I don't have any advice but good luck.

I’d be pushing for x-rays whether the vet suggested or not! Current and previous horse both had bone chips from kicks. How long since original injury? Usually sequestrums take 3-4 weeks to form.

Update: great news. Trotted up very lame, so I asked for an xray, thankfully there was no break. So then we scanned and found a lovely pocket of pus. Hooray for the pus God's. 🥂

So the pus was drained, the sac was injected with an Aminoglycocide antibiotic which is a range of tough anti b's. 💪

Then he had an injection of Finadyne and is on a seven day course of doxycycline and 2 bute a day.

Amazing service by amazing vets and yard owner who has been amazing too. So very happy and hoping this aggressive treatment will sort it out for good this time. Annoyed with myself that I didn't go for the scan originally but hey ho, it's one of those and we all agreed to wait and see.

P.s the lump on the bone at the bottom of the xray is his chestnut! And the flecks are mud on his coat.

I hope that does the trick quickly and you and he can both breathe a sigh of relief.

Thank you. So relieved there was no hairline fracture and it was infection that we'd been treated for already.

Thank you everyone for the advice.
since thursday might have been long enough for it to appear the previous antibs having helped but not quite knocked it on the head so it likely wouldn't have been there even if they did scan first visit.

That’s good to hear 🙂. Great that they brought all the kit with them.

Can he be turned out, or does he need to be kept in?
No he's gone out onto the hardstanding tonight with the others for hay and out as normal tomorrow. She wants it moving.

On the way to Lari I collected my o/h from my old yard (where my stable is being held) as he works there on a Monday and my lovely friend who is the y.o there said if there was a hairline fracture I could bring him back again for box rest for 6 wks). Thankfully it wasn't needed.

I guess not. Hard to know but thanks.
I was a bit hard on my vets when I said the other day on another post about vets wanting to sell xrays and scans. I was wrong and I regret what I said.

The vet was going to give him another five days antibiotics but I asked for seven days to be on the safe side. Fingers crossed.

Very good of them, even if you are holding the stable. And it must have been reassuring to know you had the option
Yes it was kind.

He'd already been back once after he'd first gone there in April 23 and 11 days on got severely injured so I'd brought him back 'home' and took 2 months off work to rehab him!

Course as I'm not working at the moment I'd happily of rehabbed him again! I never mind helping my lovely boy. Bless him, he's so lovely to look after, in so many ways he's my dream horse, had he not have had all his issues, he'd have been amazing to ride and compete. Such a shame.

Good news! I think you were right to ask for the longer course if a-bs. We used to have a vet whose motto seemed to be " If a little will help, just think what a lot could do!". We laughed at the overkill sometimes but in general he was right.

Yes I hope so. He's not a colicky horse so I don't think there's any risk with a couple more days, other than to my wallet, of course! 😉

My horsey find will be getting depleted again, although I've just had a call for an interview next week on a very prestigious project in the city. 🤞🤞
