My pony is currently on Prascend, Metformin and Bute and is doing well but together with managing her diet the costs are worrying.

I realise that you can get a prescription from the vet so that you can buy meds online but what on average do vets charge and how long do the prescriptions last for?

Also, can you have more than one medication on one prescription?

Any other info would be appreciated.

Charges depend on your vets. With my vet its £21 for a prescription for 160 prascend which last my horse 64 days.

Mine is £12 +VAT, and in some cases they can include a repeat - their hands are tied by regulations in some cases, for example Prascend is limited by the pack size, as it is dopamine and presumably has a black market value. I've never tried to get more than one item, so I don't know if they charge per item Before you do go down that route compare what you are paying with what you can get the meds for, so you know whether it is worth doing, if you include the cost of the prescription.

My vet charges nothing to do a prescription and I can get up to 3 months worth of pracend at a time if I want it, I would imagine it depends what condition your horse has for the bute if it's ongoing I can't see any reason why they would not do 3 months for that as well might be better to get separate prescriptions as you may find a cheaper supplier for the bute.

Between £10 and £15 seems to be average. Mine gives me 300 bute at a time, I think my vet said they can give you up to 6 months worth so it says up to 2 bute per day. After 6 months technically they should see the horse again.

As I scan and email a copy to the supplier, there is no reason why you can't get things from different places. Mine keeps the prescription on file and I get 100 at a time to spread out the payment.

my vet charges £12.50 for a prescription which covers 480 prascend, and I buy mine from animed who are currently charging 99p per tablet.

depending on the medication and the stabilty of the horses condition a prescription can be done that can be presented three times, giving a maximum of six months medication in total. where I work we will put three different medications on one prescription for one animal, we charge approx £18 for a script

the problem is most vets cannot buy some products as cheap as the online pharmacies sell them.

metacam is one and to uy it in costs the vets £6-8per 100ml bottle more than it is sold for online

I used to use Metacam and it was about half the price of what the vet would charge. The prescription cost £10 and I could get 4 repeats out of it, so 5 orders in total (one bottle of the largest available size each time). That was just over 2 years ago.

I pay £10.45 per prescription. I have 2 from my vets. One for Clenil modulate 250mg and one for salbutamol. I take my 2 prescriptions to my pharmacy after paying my vet £20.90 and ask the pharmacist if I can please have Bud's inhalers! He obliges for the 6 months and then I have to go and get another prescription and repeat the process. Once you've given your prescription to someone you can't change supplier half way through if you find somewhere has it on special offer or find it cheaper.

Works out so much cheaper for me this way. £138 for 2 x Clenil modulate and 2 x salbutamol from the vets, or £74 from the pharmacy (go every other month for them) and £21.90 on top!

All the vets I know will put up to three different items on a single prescription for the same animal for one fee

I have done. I bought 100 bute from one place and there was a problem with delivery, sorted out eventually but I wasn't happy with their attitude at first. So I got the rest on the prescription from somewhere else.

Have emailed my vet to ask what their charges are and whether they will put more than one item on the prescription.
