How does it work when a vet refers a horse to a veterinary centre like an equine hospital? what's the process and what happens?

I used to be decisive, now I'm not so sure...
I usually have a conversation with my own vet, he recommends a referral, I then make an appointment with the new vet and the old vet sends the records on.
You see the new vet for whatever the issue is, pay them and usually follow up with them, and they then feed back what has happened to your usual vet.
Once the issue is resolved you can go back to your usual vet, or, in fact, I twice have stayed with the referral vet as I liked their expertise and they were not too far away.
