horse has been at neh for lameness investigations for a week .after numerous tests all inconclusive a bone scan shows hot spots on meniscus of stifle 0nly 7 % uptake and 40% uptake on bottom and front of tibia bone. she is having anti inflamatories and aspirin and coming home for a months box rest or restricted turnout and can walk out 2 x daily building up to 20 mins ,then back for repeat bone scan . vet is hopeful of recovery if lameness is tibia but more guarded if meniscus doesnt improve. are changes with the tibia the same as bone spavin . loads of things i will ask when i collect her but can anyone explain or had similar problems

a bit of help - the meniscus is referred to the cartilage (tibia/stifle area) which may be torn or suffered some form of damage (can be repaired surgically) with good long term prognosis. Bone spavins is what you find in the hocks where the tarsometatarsal joints are found (can be treated and controlled) with medium to good long term prognosis but both might change the level of competition the horse enjoyed previously. neh are brilliant so get a full run-down when you collect your horse.

thanks ,i wasnt sure if its still classed as bone spavin in the upper hock bones .collecting her monday so will ask more questions then

hi,

have been following your posts. did they x ray after the bone scan where the take up was?? is your insurance paying for a second follow up bone scan?? that will be nearly 2 thirds of your insurance money alone on bone scans....x glad you are getting somewhere though!
