This is on a horse that I was considering buying, the owner (i Know through someone else) has been told by her vet that it is a cyst and as the horse is sound to leave it.

I think this looks more like a fibroblastic sarcoid, although I am no vet.

It definetly looks like a sarcoid, whatever it is I wouldnt even consider not treating it.
Does it actually affect the coronet band at all? Any cracks?
As for buying the horse, if you like it in every other way get a quote for treatment off your vet, show it to the owner and offer her £500!

My thoughts exactly vicijp- I do really like the horse, it is not affecting any other part of his hoof, I do not trust the vet that gave the original diagnosis so am getting my own vet out to have a look

That would be my only worry with removing it really, may start a crack down the front of the hoof. I dont think it would be mch of a problem to remove though - pain relief would probs me more costly than the treatment!
My vet was on about scanning a sarcoid the other day(all in the name of fun - weird vet!), I guess they could differentiate between a cyst that way?

Surley a simple biopsi would confirm??
Personally I wouldn't be happy with it but depends on what you what to do with it. Also I would be worried of it knocking it & getting infected??
But agree with what vicijp says.
Also how long has it had it??

he had it for at least two years, apparently it had never been infected and the vet has advised putting lard on it!!

the current owner says that it does not normally bleed but he has knocked it recently.

That is quite a bad sarcoid. The Liverpool cream would probably be around £300 - £400 for treatment due to its size. Personally i would not buy the horse unless you were getting it for a few hundred quid and even at that you are taking a risk as there is no guarentee that treatment would be successful.
