So after realising that six weeks into barefoot my boy wasn't coping the shoes are now back on, he is 100 percent happier, I've got my forward going spooky looney back :)
Within those barefoot six weeks I started to notice subtle signs of possible EMS :( which have probably been exaggerated due to the weight gain through gentle exercise as appose to fitness hacking, he was always and still is on a restricted high fibre diet.
So after chatting to my vet he is popping out tomorrow to take a look and test. He isn't horrendously overweight, I can feel ribs but he has got cresty and his hollows above his eyes have filled. I am hoping that if I get a positive I can control with diet and exercise rather than pumping him full of meds, any spare vibes would be much appreciated x

I was going to ask a similar question. How was he walking barefoot? My mare has suspected EMS (waiting on the vet to get back to me) but confirmed laminitus. She sometimes walks like she is walking on hot coals, but is not "lame" and is perfectly fine on soft ground. She is cresty and has the eye thing too. (16yo shetland)

6 Weeks is in no way long enough to see if barefoot would work though. It can be hard cause a lot of the time you can't afford to take off a year just to go barefoot.

It is quite possible so will not rule anything out :( I could feel a pulse Friday but wasn't bounding , farrier said it felt normal, haven't been able to find a pulse at all since, I am going to remove shoes again over winter

He was fine barefoot, boots on fronts quite happy to go out but lethargic and I could tell he wasn't totally comfortable, I was prepared to give it a year as knew it would take time but the whole weight gain frightened me hence the shoes! I only have field or road hacking no school
