My TB X ID mare (retired) is rising 25,and kept at home. In winter, she will be turned out all day and in at night. She is a VERY good doer and holds her condition well (too well!). She is on Hi-Fi Lite, a few handfuls of nuts, carrots, Hardy Hoof, Benevit vitamin & mineral supplement + ad lib (within reason!) good quality, home grown meadow hay.

I wondered if it would be better to feed a low calorie balancer that will "replace" the need for the Hardy Hoof and Benevit? Or should I continue as I am on the basis of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it..." ??

She is on a sachet of Danilon/day for her arthritic neck. She is otherwise fit, healthy, happy and shiny-coated!

You could try Top Spec Senior Balancer which also contains the recommended rate of Glucosamine. It is approx £40 per 20kg sack and is fed at a rate of 100g per 100kg of horses weight.

Alternatively, I believe Spillers have now brought out a senior balancer also with glucosamine.

Perhaps call one of the helplines to see if their product would be suitable?

Balancers are very cost effective for good doers.

i have to say i am very impressed with the spillers senior balancer, have been using it for about 2 weeks with my lad and he is looking amazing and starting to get dapples (never had dapples before!)

My 25 year old irish cob good doer is on Baileys LoCal at £25 per 20kg sack. She has 2 mugs per day (recommended dose) plus joint supplement in one level scoop Hi-Fi Lite and 1 sachet bute every other day for arthritis. I weigh her high fibre haylage. Don't feed hay due to laryngial hemiplegia diagnosed three years ago. She hacks out in walk only for up to 1 1/2 hrs every three days or so which she loves and I believe helps her arthritis and general outlook on life.

There is a lady at our stables and she has a 35yr old pony and since being given global herbs golden oldie ( I think) he ha been acting more ' actively' xx
