Right I have a conundrum.

My boy will be 24 in January. So apparently this is the last year I can insure him. This is annoying me slightly as he is perfectly healthy ( other than being old) I haven't claimed my insurance in five years for anything as he hasn't hurt himself ( we are injury only anyway) and he is still rideable and perky.

So which, if any, companies are willing to insure injury only after 25? I don't find this a fair thing to cut people off from a safety net just because their horse is doing a job and enjoying life in a healthy way. I know not having it will keep me awake at night. I feel like us veteran owners are being punished for our horses living beyond this age.

Any help??

May be worth going via a broker as they may know some good policies that will offer cover.

I think my NFU policy will insure my horse, who is 21, until she is 26, but she has obviously been on injury only insurance since she was 17. Contact NFU? You will eventually end up in the same boat, but at least you'll stay out of the boat for another year. Don't understand the difference between a 22 year old horse who cuts its leg in a field and a 27 year old one. I agree -- it is very silly, as horses over the age of 16 will not be insured for age related illness anyway.

I kept Frank on full insurance (with petplan you didn't have to transfer to the veteran policy until they reached a bit older if you had insured them with them before a certain age) until exclusions/premium cost meant it made more sense to use alternatives. I'm not sure whether the external injury only is ever worth it, Frank has had 3 claims in the 9 years I have had him, none have been external injuries.

you can still have insurance for external injuries! I've had my mare for 14yrs and she will be 30 next year. in that time I've never been able to claim as its always been something "internal" so its not been covered. so I cancelled her insurance and just keep her insured with bhs for public liability!

Who was you insurer? :)

I was with petplan for the last couple of years, NFU got far to expensive, considering they wouldn't cover anything!

Thanks im not a fab of pet plan but I'd they would insure him from 25+ onwards then id pay them.

I know some people might say that I'm pi$$in& £22 up a wall each month when I haven't claimed on the policy since I took it out but having that peace of mind is worth it for me.

Ive toyed with the idea of putting money in a savings account and taking out BHS gold membership but I put money away for other things and with my luck have blown through a lot of it on incidents and necessary bills that have come up unfortunately and would hate to have had to use his money and then something has happened to him.

It's a fine line. Hoping KBIS will continue to insure him under a different class of policy :(

What are you insuring for, what I mean is what kind of injury could he have in this current lifestyle? Would you want him to have colic surgery? Would you put him on 6 months box rest? If he had a nasty cut in the field you can get a vet to stitch and anti biotics for £300 ish which is probably close to your excess.

At present I have injury only with £130 excess and liability etc. If he colicked and a jag of buscopan and painkillers didn't sort IT then I'm afraid I wouldn't out him through anything else.

He is insured for all PC/RC activities although getting a new car and no towbar has meant we have been happy hackers this year but hoping to get out to some pleasure rides common ride and maybe some TREC next year :)

He has never been a sick or sorry horse in all the years I've had him has colicked once and had only three proper injuries that required vets treatment in 13 yrs so ive been lucky with him but always worried that something g would happen that I couldn't afford and I let him down :(
