Hi everyone!

I know this has probably been posted before so I apologise if this is boring/already answered!

So basically, next month I am planning to enter my 18 year old connemara gelding into a local showing show, ridden/handled by a family friend's thirteen year old daughter.

We would be entering them in the Veteran classes and as far as I'm aware you're meant to turn out to type, this is where I'm a little confused as although he is a native, he is hogged due to sweet itch so should he still be turned out as a connemara should with the exception of his mane?

Also, I'm a bit confused as to the correct dress for a child, if anyone could point me in the right direction, it would be much appreciated!
I will attach some photos of my gelding as he doesn't really look like the photos of showing Connies! (He's unregistered)

Thank you in advance!

Here are a few photos just to get the general idea of what he looks like!

also adding to my questions (sorry!)

Should I plait his forelock? as although he is hogged, I left his forelock.
also, can anyone recommend which colour tweed would look best with his colour (grey)?

once again, thank you in advance!

I wouldn't worry too much just ensure that the turn out is tidy and correct, so tweed jacket (not black or navy), dark coloured gloves, ideally cream jods (not bright dressage white), and on the tack front, just a fitted numnah/saddle pad that doesn't show outside of the saddle. Make sure everything spotless and go for it. Little things like not using the show supplied ribbon for the competitor number but taking a piece of a elastic which blends into the jacket colour can just help with the tidy overall look Not sure re the forelock but would say plait as he is hogged but others may think differently as he is a Connemara. Enjoy and have fun.

He is unregistered and not typey enough to do the M&M classes so personaly I would have been turning him out like a hunter pony (plaited and trimmed to within an inch of his life).

How tall is he?

Generaly dark green or brown tweeds go well with greays. Blue tweeds are not the done things and light coloured tweeds can make the whole picture look washed out.

Here is a good guide on how to turn out a hunter pony (note that on a grey quartermarks are often not done as they can just look ungroomed rather than like quarter marks)

Ideally Child should wear tweed jacket, shirt and tie, canary jods, brown short boots (with jod clips), hair in a bun and a net for girls. Navy velvet hat with flesh coloured harness, brown leather gloves and carry a show cane. Get as close to that as you can, but don't bankrupt yourself

Hi, thank you for your reply,
He is 15hh!
I agree that he doesn't look typey enough and that's where I got confused because he doesn't seem to fit any show categories well enough! He's only been showing once in the 14 years I've owned him but that was about ten years ago so I'm not very experienced in this area.

Once again, thank you for your help

as he is 15hh he would also be over height for the M&M classes so those are a definite no go!

I would turn him out as a 15hh SHP (your young rider would need long black boots due to his size).

As you have hogged him, I would plait the forelock, bang and plait/pull his tail, trim his heels. Dress for child would be tweed, beige jods, joddy boots, brown/black gloves and absolutely no bling! Plain tack as possible, no martingale or rein stoppers. plain saddle shaped numnah.

given the horse is 15hh, all 15hh hunter ponies are shown by riders in long boots.

This is a veteran class and yes the horse is 15hh but the rider is a child. As it is only local though the child can probably wear anything but personally I prefer to see a child in joddy boots and not long.

age is irrelevant when it comes to what boots to wear (the whole under 16 thing is a myth).
all 15hh ponies (at that height the only pony classes would be 15hh SHP, ISHP or ISRT) or horses (small hacks, small riding horse and some smaller cobs) are shown by riders in long boots.

Just as Large breed M&M's (with the exclusion of the section C, though most of them choose long anyway) should also be shown with riders in long boots. To be frank a rider in short boots on a pony/horse of that size would look silly.
